I uninstalled Sygate firewall and tried to install the Free Comodo firewall.
When it requests a reboot to finish the install, this is what I get after I say OK to the reboot.

A second attempt produced the same results. Do you think this is a hardware or software issue? I got out of it by using GoBack to revert the drive and then it booted up fine.

This is not the first software install to give me a BSOD. Although the message was different.

On the other hand, there are software programs that do install without a hitch.

I can't post a mini dump because I didn't save it before reverting the drive back to a previous state. Although I can reproduce the BSOD if that would be helpful.

Hi Alicia, sounds like a conflict between the Firewalls. Have you tried in Safe Mode? Neil.

An explanation of the error ....
Neil may have a point re. trying in Safe Mode - I guess you rebooted after uninstalling Sygate prior to installing Comodo? When starting the computer normally after the initial BSOD does it restart or simply BSOD again?

If this is the case how are you going to save the minidump?

An analysis of the minidump may be helpful in pinpointing the cause - run it through BlueScreenView and post the files highlighted in pink - srr the Home Page.

For Installation of Comodo firewall, I uninstalled Sygate firewall, rebooted. Checked for any sygate folders in Program and Appdata, there weren't any. Ran jv Reg cleaner, emptied temp, and %temp% files, and rebooted. Disabled AV, winpatrol and Startup Monitor.

When attempting to install the Comodo firewall, I got the BSOD as above. I hit the reset button, and when GoBack came up I reverted to a time before install attempt.

For 2nd attempt I booted up into safe mode. During the install I got this message:

Cannot install Comodo Live PC Support. Error:16:01. Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or windows installer is not correctly installed.

At this point I rebooted system with START button to get back into normal mode. On restart I again got the same BSOD. I reverted drive with GoBack and it came up normally.

And since the only way it would come up without BSOD was to revert the drive, you're right Pete I can't post a windows minidump.

Would you please confirm that when you installed Comodo you installed only the firewall - not the av and anything else offered? It's been a while since I installed Comodo anywhere, but I do recall that the option to install the av is checked by default?
A general registry clean or a Find in Registry for Sygate?

Two suggestions which may or may not work :) .....

Reinstall Sygate - should be no problem there and then uninstall it.

Using GoBack has presumably reinstated the registry entries removed by jv16PowerTools so I would suggest using the Find in Registry applet and find 'Sygate' - delete the entries found with backup.

Go - Start > Run > services.msc > Enter and in the list of Services check that there is not one relating to Sygate. If there is double click on it and set to Disabled.

Then reboot and install the Comodo Firewall only.

    Post back with results.

The other thought I have is the possibility of dumping the memory to a USB stick which will retain the minidump file for analysis. Never tried this and have no idea if it would work, but to try you need to .....

(Pause while I boot my old XP box :))

Plug in a USB stick and note the drive letter assigned

Right click My Computer icon > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery - Settings and under System Failure ....

    Uncheck Automatically Restart if checked.

Under Write debugging information select 'Kernel memory dump'

Under Dump File insert X:\MEMORY DUMP where X is the drive letter assigned to the USB stick

    OK your way out.

If you try this set up make the changes above before installing Comodo and ensure that the USB stick is inserted prior to the installation.

    I only installed the firewall.

I did a general registry clean. I should have done a find for Sygate. Silly of me.

Since I used GoBack to revert the drive, Sygate is installed as before. Do you want me to go to the uninstall it step? Then find registry entries? etc

I have my computer set to not automatically restart.

How large a file will this mini dump file be? I have one USB stick that's 256MB
and one that is 16GB with some data on it already. Can it be put in an explorer folder on my 16GB USB stick?

I have been having an issue installing a newer version of Acronis. I get to the point when it's near the end of installation, and the computer reboots without finishing the install, without writing a minidump or Dr.Watson but with no BSOD. (maybe this info only muddies the water).

Do you think the issue could possibly be related?

I think that may be helpful.
A kernel dump may be larger than that, but a mini dump on XP is about 64Kb so try the 256 Mb stick.
I would think that there is a very good chance - current thoughts - a damaged Windows installer or possible hard drive problems.

If the minidump can be saved to the USB stick we may get some clues.

I'm thinking of buying a new system (not because of this issue). I'll know in a week or two. l'll post back to either work on this issue, or let you know I've abandoned mission.
