    Hello all!

I recently tried to install Internet Explorer 8 on my Dell laptop P2 running Win ME. After the computer froze during install, I restarted the computer only to have this message appear: "Explorer has caused an error in Browseui.dll. Explorer will now close. If you continue to have this problem, try restarting your computer." After closing the message out, the desktop, start menu etc was not accessible. And after restarting the computer many times, it appeared this was not going to change, even when restarted in safe mode. After getting advice that this was a registry problem, I did the following:

Restart your computer using the Windows Me emergency startup disk.
Use the arrow key on your keyboard to select Start Computer Without CD-ROM Support, and then press ENTER.

At the prompt type scanreg /fix, and then press ENTER.
After the ScanReg process is complete, restart your computer.

However, when I tried this, scanreg /fix returned only the mesaage "Invalid command' and am still frustrated. I think I may be confused as to what an emergency startup disk is, however. Is this something that normally comes with the system (I used an ME CD for the above failed scanreg /fix operation) or is it something that I should have created a long time ago when I first got the OS? If so, then does anyone know where I can download one? Or is my problem something else? All help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

I believe you got the info at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q289799

The emergency startup disk you should be using is a floppy disk that can be created when the OS is installed. If you chose not to create the disk or there wasn't one included with your system when you bought it you will need to create one before you can repair the problem. The disk can be created from any system using the same OS or you can borrow one from a friend that has the same OS. If you can't create or borrow one you can download one on to floppy from http://www.putergeek.com/downloads/#winme_full

Then follow the instruction at the first link.

I am ready for IE8.0 tell me where you got it. Man.. I completly mised 7.0 also. Grin...

    I jest Kathy!

IE is in 6.0 release so what did you actually do. Directx 8 or IE 6.0?

Secondly ME does not install the scanreg program. It will work but you must get it from a win98 machine.

Sounds like you need to go to add/remove and uninstall IE. That will not truly uninstall but back you up a version. This older version may work. Then do some cleanup and try the 6.0 update again.

If it was Directx 8.0 then get back and we can fix that also!

    Hi Alice

I mandated at my office and to all my clients and friends not to purchace ME the sames as I now do with XP Home.

So have been lucky enough to not have hands on, but a few ME computers.

These mostly friends or private consult jobs. I have never found it yet! Did not concern me, did not ask or care why. Because I always have it on a floppy.

I did not install these ME's so I do not know why scanreg was not there if it is available on the ME install disk.

These units all belonged to different people.

Same thing this person found. But in my case I used search to try to find. If it is in fact there, in her case then she may have to type the full path as in:

c:\windows\command\scanreg /fix but first she do:

    c:\windows\command\scanreg /backup
    then
    c:\windows\command\scanreg /fix
    then
    c:\windows\command\scanreg /opt

KATHY you should try the above in this order if it finds scanreg.

As I said I didn't even know it was available in ME since it was missing in the 6 or 8 I have worked on. I did think it unusual on the first computer but really didn't care.

    Hi Mike :)

I don't have much experience with WinMe either.

I thought it was odd that the Microsoft article Brenda mentioned would give instructions to use scanreg in Windows Millennium if it did not exist so I did some looking up.

The article I gave says this:
I also found this with a google search:
    =========copy/paste==========
    From: Mike M (No_Spam@Corned_Beef.Only)
Subject: Re: Help please-cannot get into Windows
    Newsgroups: microsoft.public.windowsme.general, microsoft.public.windowsme.setup, microsoft.public.windowsme.software, microsoft.public.windowsme.systemtools, microsoft.public.windowsme.new-user

If you boot from a WinMe floppy then scanreg should be available to you. If
for some reason it doesn't work try using instead:
    C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND\SCANREG /RESTORE
This will then present you with the option of choosing one of the five backup
copies of the registry to restore.

If you have a Win Me CD (rather than a recover disk) you should be able to
simply reinstall Win Me over the present installation without the loss of any user data or even installed programs. Some but not all OEM "Recovery CDs" offer the same option however there are some that will always return the PC to the "straight from factory" condition with the loss of all user data and programs.

I think that the MSN Explorer 8 was the attempted install, much different from the MS Internet Explorer. I really haven't met anyone that had much success getting it to work. It apparently is MS's idea to compete with the AOL thing.

    Lol!

10-4 to that Mark. I tried to use it on a clients computer for about 20 minutes. That was enough for me.

I don't know why, about the ME scanreg Alice. But if Kathy comes back she can try the c:\windows\scanreg / as I mentioned in my last post and we will see.
