Reinstalled win98 today and now Opera 7.2 and Netscape 7.2 work fine for about five minutes, then all of a sudden, it's "operation timed out" for every site I try to visit. I have to reboot to get an additional five minutes, then they're back to timing out. Agent 2.0 still works even after the browsers stop.

    Any ideas?

    "Reinstalled win98 today "
Over the top, or clean install?

Did you have any Anti-Viurus and Firewall shut down for the re-install.

Did you shutdown ANY & ALL programs that may loaded at startup.

Do you know if Internet Explorer does the same ?

Did you check Windows Updates and re-install any that may be needed ?

If you have a Firewall try turning it off and se what happenes.

    OUCH !!! I forgot something.

Did you boot from the HD or the 98 Startup disk to reload Windows ?

When you did the overtop re-install, DID IT GO back into the EXISTING Windows folder.???

Or did it create a new one ? Such as C:\Windows001.

If you booted from the HD the above is VERY possible unless you paid STRICT attention as to where it was going during the re-install.

The culprit has revealed itself. Today after using NS for a bit, a message from Zone Labs appeared saying that ZoneAlarm had detected a problem with its installation and had locked out internet access "for [my] protection." It said the problem that was preventing ZoneAlarm from starting was similar to a hacker trying to disable my security, so it locked down internet access. Whatever you say, Zone Labs.

Anyway, I ran the uninstaller and downloaded and installed a fresh copy and now I've been surfing for the last half hour without incident. I hope that's all there was to it.

This may be a wild idea but, that maybe could have been caused if ZoneAlarm was not shutdown at the time of the re-install.

Even if you did boot from the Floppy to start the install ZA and other things may kick in when the machine reboots.

The system was crashing like mad the other day (10+ times in a single day) for no discernable reason, then finally it gave out altogether and each time I booted up, explorer would immediately do an "illegal op" crash leaving me stalled so I'd have to reboot and repeat. It would do the same in safe mode too. I didn't know what else to do, so I booted from the CD and reinstalled win98 (into the same folder as before, since I wasn't sure I had the disk space for an entirely new folder.).

I can not comment about booting from thee CD as I do not have a bootable 98 CD ( or at least I never tried booting from it )

I always copied the contents of the Win98 Folder on the CD to a partition other than C: on the HD and would run setup from there after booting to a floppy.

As for the new folder bit, you did not want one of them anyway. It needs to go over the existing.

As for the Firewall problem I am almost sure that it was caused by it being activated during the re-install. Unless my thinking is way off base the re-install might look to the firewall as a so called "invasion ".

But if it is working now all must be OK. Hope it stays that way.
