Browser that is close to Netscape?

Hi Everybody,
I have Netscape 7.1.
I love the email program and the browser.
I think it's now obsolete and unsupported.
I need to try out a different one but am very unsure where to start.
Is there anything that is close to what Netscape is and where do I find it.

I am in complete agreement with James, and you will be able to use the same profile which was used for NS7.1.
Just a word of caution. Do not try to use both programs, because your profile will become corrupted unless you use two separate profiles. But, if you uninstall NS7.1, you will be ok. You may want to copy the plugins folder from NS7.1, and paste it in the Seamonkey folder, replacing the single plugin found in Seamonkey.

I made the switch from Netscape to Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird. Very good programs and I have had no problems with them at all. You can find them here.

Well, Seamonkey is closer to the Netscape7.x. But, if you prefer standalones the Firefox/Thunderbird combination is the way to go. In fact that combination is my default, although I am using Seamonkry, as well.

Do I uninstall my Netscape first?
I would love to be able to keep my
book marks and my email addresses.
Is there a way to do that?
I'm not too savvy on this.
I've always used Netscape since I got

If you don't plan to keep Netscape, then yes, uninstall it before installing SeaMonkey. By doing so, SeaMonkey will automatically use your existing Profile, which will ensure that you lose nothing.

However, you can run both Netscape and SeaMonkey with no problem. You must first create a NEW profile before
installing SeaMonkey. Sharing a profile will cause a corruption of the profile data.

If you uninstall Netscape, then first:

Make a backup copy of your Profiles folder
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

Make a backup copy of your plugins folder
C:\Program Files\Netscape\plugins

Uninstall Netscape using Add/Remove

Delete the Netscape program folder
C:\Program Files\Netscape

REBOOT YOUR PC

Now install SeaMonkey

I'm going to try to keep Netscape untill I know I like Seamonkey.

Close Netscape/Mozilla

Back up the Profiles Folder:

Next, go to:
START | PROGRAM FILES | NETSCAPE 7.X | PROFILE MANAGER

Open the Profile Manager and create a NEW Profile, entering a NEW PROFILE NAME (other than "default ") then click "Finish ". The new Profile will be automatically placed in the Profiles folder located here:
C:\Documents and Settings\user_name\Application Data\Mozilla\Profiles

You won't need to do anything, other than give a unique name to a new Profile.

The email component is exactly like Netscape!

You can bypass the Profile Manager when starting either Netscape or SeaMonkey, as explained in this Solutions page:

The program is identical. The throbber is different but the fact of the matter is, you won't really see any significant difference. If I were you, I would uninstall Netscape and install SeaMonkey. Netscape is compromised security-wise so there is little point in retaining it. SeaMonkey will do everything Netscape did and the bonus is, it comes fully updated.

If you use the same profile of Netscape, you need to do nothing. If you create a separate profile for Seamonkey, you can set up the account(s), and, then go to the NS7.2 profile|....slt|Mail|account and copy the Inbox and Sent file. Then you paste the files into the equivalent Seamonkey account. You do this in Windows Explorer with both programs closed. I have a link from Ramona's website , which will help you, if you have WinXP, where the profile folders are hidden by default.

If you have already received mail in SeaMonkey, then rename the Inbox, and Sent folder, e.g., OldInbox or Inbox2, etc.

In Netscape, open the Mail component
Click on: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Accounts | Server Settings
Remove all ticks from the settings

Otherwise, you will continue to receive Mail in Netscape, when you open Mail & Newsgroups.

Ok I backed up my profile and plugin folders.
I have downloaded seamonkey. But have not installed yet.

In my documents and settings I have...
all users
Debbie
default user
Now do I need to make another profile?
What I am trying to do is switch to seamonkey, get my mail through seamonkey,and use the seamonkey browser.
I want to keep netscape untill I have tried out seamonkey.
I don't want to use the mail proggy or the browers anymore but I also don't want to lose my mail, bookmarks, my saved form info, my passwords, and my junk mail settings.
Do I now uninstall netscape and reboot,then install seamonkey without losing everything?

 

Which Profile is the one you are using in Netscape: all users, Debbie, or default user? To determine this, look here:

Open Mail & Newsgroups
Click on: Edit | Mail & Newsgroups Account Settings | Server Settings
Scroll down to the "Local directory" field
The Profile Name will tell you which Profile is being used

C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\yourname\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename?

Once you have defined the active Profile, then move the other two profiles to a backup, or some other folder.

If you want to use all the Netscape Profile data for SeaMonkey, then all you need to do is install SeaMonkey, but DO NOT OPEN NETSCAPE. If you do, then you risk corrupting the Profile.

Once you see that SeaMonkey is just like Netscape, then uninstall Netscape, using Add/Remove.

You have a backup of your Profiles, so you won't lose anything. You really should be making a Profiles folder backup frequently. By doing so, you will always be secure in not losing any Profile Data.

If you decide you don't like SeaMonkey, then uninstall using Add/Remove, and then Netscape will use the existing Profile.

I think that I understand the problem. In WinXP you will have your profiles in "Debbie ". I think that ALL Users is for multiple users in XP. I don't have a clue about "Default User ". It seems to contain Microsoft stuff. I never even look at either All Users or Default User.
So, I could modify Ramona's path to:
C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\Debbie\APPLICATION DATA\Mozilla\Profiles\profilename
As for creating a profile, you use the Profile Manager. I will stop here, because I can see a lot of confusion. I will let Ramona take it from here, but don't do anything like deleting folders.
