Have a strange problem which somebody may be able to help out with. When clicking on a link to SOME (not ALL) other site, I occasionally get a blank page with a text message "Your browser has sent a message this server doesn't understand." Once the message was "Your browser sent a non-HTTP-compliant message." with the same non-result. That's it. I can't get to that site. This does not happen with IE, just 4.73. I have also tried an upgrade to 6.x which also doesn't work. Think it may be that I'm lacking some plug-in(s) which are needed to run animated graphics on the desired site or something. Any ideas? Thx in advnace.

    Hi Gram,

Have you thought about upgrading to 4.78 or 4.79? I have 4.78 and have not had any problems getting into sites. You may want to give that a try.

    Welcome to the Forum!

    Hi gram,

Mike is on target with his suggestion. This is a common message when an unsupported, or outdated Web browser is used.

Could you give us some links that you are unable to access? Then we could see what's going on, for certain.

There have been quite a few significant changes and improvements to Communicator since Version 4.73. You can take a look at the Release Notes, here:
    Communicator 4.0 - 4.08 and 4.5 - 4.79 Release Notes

Yeah, I understand that. And I'll try it. But remember, I already tried Netscape 6.2 and it still was a problem. ???

    gram,

Netscape 6 is not an upgrade for Communicator, it is an entity unto itself, and a total rewrite of the code.

First though, could you give us some links that you are unable to access?

Also, have you done routine maintenance:
delete the files in your Netscape Cache folder
    delete the netscape.hst file
    delete the *.tmp files

Are you using a third-party download manager, like GetRight or Download Accelerator Plus, etc.?

Do you use a HOSTS file (not HOSTS.SAM) for the purpose of blocking Adware/Spyware?

Just a few more things to check. Post back and let us know.

First, whether or not 6 is an upgrade, I still installed it and got the same problem. I do perform routine maintenance (cache, temps. etc). I do use both Black Ice (firewall) and The Proxomitron (banner killer). I also uninstalled ALL Netscape versions and did a new install of Mozilla (0.9.9). Same problem. This does not happen with IE. An example of a site which I cannot get to is Travelocity (www.travelocity.com). I do not use s thirdparty download manager. I do not presently have any Netscapes installed but did search for and delete the netscape.hst file. There is now a hosts file in c:\windows and a "hosts" folder in BlackICE. Look forward to your thoughts and thanks again for the effort!

    Gram,

I too go to Travelocity ocassionally, but I have never had problems getting the site to come up. That is with 4.7 and now 4.78. Did you try a clean install of a 4.xx browser? Maybe something is being left behind that is messing things up. Go to Ramona's site for instructions on cleaning everything out before installing. That would be the next thing that I would try.

    gram,

See if rebuilding the Netscape registry will clear up this problem.

    With Netscape closed:

    Do a "Find" for nsreg.dat
    Delete the file

    Open Netscape
The Profile Manager will open and prompt you to create a new Users Profile.
Apply the SAME USER NAME that you are currently using.

If this doesn't help, let us know.

I thought I would try Mike's suggestion first (clean up old Netscape remnants
based upon your site's instructions and then do a clean install of 4.78). Right now I don't have Netscape installed (but I DO have Mozilla installed which is how I got here). Problem is, I now have to figure out if I can save the equivalent in Mozilla of the Netscape Users folder for future use in the to be installed Netscape. ?

    Uh Oh!

    gram,

If you have already done the clean install, and have deleted all instances of 4.73 and did not make a backup of your 4.73 Users Folder, you will have to do a manual transfer of files. Since Mozilla and Netscape 6 use the same Profiles folder, I am assuming that the following will work for Mozilla:

You can transfer your Bookmarks from Mozilla to NS 4.79 by copying bookmarks.html, renaming the file to bookmark.htm and placing it in your 4.79 prefs.js file.

You may be able to import your Mozilla Address Book to Netscape 4.79, if not, you can transfer your Address Book by using a third party program, such as Dawn

The mail files (the ones with no extensions) are the same format in both programs, and may be directly copied from one mail directory to the other, in Windows Explorer.

Post back and let us know if the solutions worked for you.

    Ramona :D

P.S. Back up your 4.79 Users Folder frequently, once you have it up and running.

    Proxomitron banner blocker???

Just passin' by and thought I would throw in my $0.02... Could your ad blocker be causing the problem? Have you tried accessing these sites without it? Just wondering, hope you can get your problem straightened out.
