[Resolved] Browser redirects, cmd.exe fails, dds.scr fails

My main symptoms appear similar to others on this BBS, so hopefully I have
come to the right place for help.

State of system at suspected time of infection

Microsoft Windows XP, Service Pack 2, Home Edition

Most recently updated successfully on 3/22/09 by Windows Update Agent
    Update for Windows XP [KB959772]
Security Update for Windows XP [KB958690]
Security update for Windows XP [KB960225]
Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool - March 2009 [KB890830]

    Firewall:
    ZoneAlarm version 8.0.298.00
    TrueVector security engine version 8.0.298.00
    Driver version 8.0.298.00

    AntiVirus:
    AVG version 8.5.283
    Virus DB: 270.11.48/2048

Most recent successful update on 4/08/2009 9:13:08 PM
Next update failed on 4/08/2009 11:24:34 PM
All subsequent AVG updates failed in the same manner: Unable to connect.

Malware symptoms first appeared 4/08/2009 11:22:pM:

    1. While browsing on Firefox, got a message window from AVG
that it had detected 2 Exploits. AVG history export:

    Web Shield findings
    "Infection "; "Object "; "Result "; "Detection time "; "Object Type "; "Process "

    "Exploit JavaScript Obfuscation (type 623) "; "coreman.info/feed/ZDZmODZlMjg1OWRlOTlhNjg5ZmZhY2RmYmQ5NjAyNzA= ";" "; "4/8/2009, 11:22:49 PM "; "file "; "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe "

    "Exploit Rogue spyware scanner (type 621) "; "check-pro-pc-av.com/11039/3/ ";" "; "4/8/2009, 11:22:49 PM "; "file "; "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe "

    "Exploit MDAC ActiveX code execution (type 290) "; "cephilla.com/css/index.php?sid=8bbd85b687b480b381b08dde8bb6c2b1d4b6c4b489ba8bb286b180b3 ";" "; "2/10/2009, 5:57:58 PM "; "file "; "C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe "

    2. Links in Google search results are redirected, especially for anti-virus sites.
I opened each link in its own tab. Tab history showed originally requested page at root and 2 additional unrequested pages on top. I could use Tab history to visit originally requested page. No interaction was made with any page resulting from re-direction.

    3. AVG update failed consistently with communication failure although Firefox Browser could reach Google and typical news sites.

Advice on AVG site for "unable to connect" suggests deleting AVG temporary files, repairing host link, and retry. This had no effect, AVG update still failed.

Also cleared browser personal data, cleared browser cache. No change in symptoms.

"Full computer" AVG scan found no issues other than the usual warnings for tracking cookies. I requested AVG eliminate all suspect files (the cookies).

Unable to find any relevant help on any of the three problems, I restarted Windows in the hope that the AVG update communication problem might be due to running (mostly off-line or hibernating) for several days.

    Symptoms after restart:

    1. Not all services are restarted. Some of the services missing in the tray include
    Yahoo messenger
    Microsoft messenger
Acer power management (laptop power usage controls)
ZoneLabs (although Windows Security Center says it is running)
    - tray icon can be added by using start menu to start ZoneLabs
AVG (although AVG user interface says it is running)
    - Tray Icon can be added using Start menu to start "AVG tray icon "

    2. Unable to start a DOS command prompt by any means (including safe boot). Executing cmd.exe results in Windows Explorer windows being closed (e.g. file directories and system Control panel).
NOTE: I still have command capability via a 3rd party command shell.

    3. Still unable to update AVG

I found additional advice on an AVG site concerning update problem "failure to communicate ". It suggested using the command
    net stop dnscache
which I was able to enter via the 3rd party command shell, Response was:
The DNS Client was stopped successfully.
The Services table showed "DNS client" was stopped.
AVG update still hangs and times out with the "failure to communicate" message. Still fails after DNS Client was restarted.

    4. Unable to install Spybot search & destroy. Install failed to connect to update site using a raw IP address.

    5. Ran Windows Live safety scan successfully. Notable results:

1 issue not able to be cleaned
    Delete detected resources
    1 severe issue found
    Exploit:Win32/Pdfjsc.J
    c:\documents and settings\admin\local settings\application data\
    mozilla\firefox\profiles\bf6sjt2f.default\cache\fa7de7a1d01

    likely infected

I as unable to manually delete this file. It is the last file in the cache directory.

    6. Eventually Firefox had difficulty loading pages. A new page would start blank and the title would say "loading... ", but there was never a timeout.

    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
    7. When restarting again, I observed a much higher than usual internet traffic rate reported in the Task Manager, although FireFox could not load any pages at all. The traffic soon stopped.
I suspect my ISP may now be blocking my connection after I get on-line.

    8. I have unplugged the Internet cable until this machine can be dis-infected. (Wifi is always disabled).

I cannot run any of the recommended scanners or tools that require Internet access. I am looking for tools that can be transferred as files to the infected machine via a CD or USB drive.
    ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    9. I can use a CD or USB drive to transfer files from a clean machine with an
Internet connection to the off-line infected machine. (I check for autorun.inf or any other unrequested file each time I use it and have not found any thing
suspicious yet, I have also disabled Auto-run on both clean and infected machines following advice at http://antivirus.about.com/od/securitytips/ht/autorun.htm ).

The infected and clean machines have never been connected together and have never had any means to communicate with each other.

    10. I have tried running anti-rootkit software from Sophos and Panda. I used a clean machine to download them. I renamed the executables before putting them on the USB drive for transfer to the infected laptop. I rebooted the laptop in "safe mode" and ran each program. Both programs ran OK, but neither program found anything suspicious.

    11. I tried using an Avira recovery CD. This worked OK, reported warnings on
various archive files that it failed to fully investigate and reported 1 suspicious issue in a temporary GoToMeeting executable, which I erased. (I have used GoToMeeting in the past successfully, but the temporary file was unnecessary).

    12. I discovered a "Google Update Helper" service with a suspicious entry under "Scheduled Tasks ". It had 1 visible and 1 hidden trigger. The visible trigger was to run once on 4/14/2009. The second, hidden, trigger was to run every 20 minutes starting on 4/15/2009 at 3:56 PM and to run for 7200 hours.

I uninstalled Google Update, but this did not uninstall the Google Update Helper. I deleted the Scheduled Task entries, I disabled the Google Update Helper service and I deleted the GoogleUpdate.exe file the service was set to execute. This disabled service remains listed in the Services table.

I may have spared myself from additional harassment by this malware, but there has been no change to the system behavior documented above.

    13. I have also disabled a "Java Quick Starter" service that is new, and therefor suspicious, or at least unnecessary. This has had no effect.

    14. I have compared the remaining Services and the Task Manager's list of processes to those on a clean machine and can see no obvious unexplained differences.

I am able to run standalone applications with no apparent problems (other than those listed above). I can print, I can listen to mp3 files, etc.

    15. I found this bulletin board (WindowsBBS) using the clean machine by using a Google search on "cmd.exe crashes ". I was impressed by the responses I saw to others with similar problems. I signed up.

    16. I transferred the recommended dds.scr to the infected machine, but it will not run there. It briefly brings up a black DOS-like window that quickly vanishes. I tried renaming dds.scr, but got same results.

    16. I have run HijackThis.exe successfully and attach the results below.

    Hi and welcome

Let me see if I can help here.

If you hit snags try to go to the next step.

It's probable you'll have to transfer the tools to the infected machine via a CD or USB drive.

Print this topic or save to notepad, it will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps as we will need to close all windows that are open later in the fix.

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

    ***
Please download RegQuery by Noviciate to your desktop
    • Copy the following registry keypath by highlighting the text and pressing CTRL and C at the same time
      • [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\windows nt\currentversion\drivers32]
    • Double click RegQuery.exe to run the program
    • Paste the text you have copied using CRTL and V, into the textbox
    • Click the Query button
    • A Notepad file will open. Please paste the contents in your next reply
    • You may now close the RegQuery program

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

Please allow ComboFix to install, if needed, Windows Recovery Console. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    No Validation is Required.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

    ** Please Note:
At times ComboFix may appear to stall, please be patient.
    • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    • Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Please only run the tool once, ty.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

    Results of RegQuery, ComboFix unresponsive

    Hi Juliet,

    Thank you, for your advice.

    1. RegQuery appeared to run successfully on the infected machine.

    2. I followed the instructions for ComboFix, renaming it to Combo-Fix as suggested in the .gif image. I then transferred it to the infected machine. I then disabled the Resident Shield of AVG and I stopped the ZoneAlarm fire wall (the infected laptop is not connected to the internet).

I then ran Combo-Fix.exe and nothing appeared to happen. I know you advised patience, but after 20 minutes I decided to see if it was running by starting the task manager. No task manager window appeared. No other programs could be run from the Start menu (e.g. even a standard "hearts" game). No windows appeared for anything. I did not know if this was due to Combo-Fix or due to a malware response. I researched tips on running ComboFix at http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and it showed that ComboFix normally displays a log window and generates dialog windows.

After 30 minutes with no response on the infected machine, I tried to shut down. There was no response even to the Start menu request to shut down. I used the physical power switch to force a power off.

    3. When I restarted, I had to wait for a file system check (not unusual on this old laptop), then Windows started and all the normal services that had been missing since the infection, started and showed up in tray. I did not attempt to rerun ComboFix or to run any other applications. ZoneAlarm appears to be running. AVG Resident Shield has been re-enabled.

    4. I then ran another HijackThis and I will report its results in the next post.

I am so sorry for the delay I did not receive email notification of your reply.

Wish you had sent me a private message, do so if this should happen again.
    Let's proceed please.

Open HijackThis. Click on Open the Misc Tools Section.

    * On the screen, click on "Delete a file on reboot... ".
    * Copy/paste the following path into the dialog box that popped up, and click 'Open':
    C:\WINDOWS\hiokef.uor

    * HJT will ask you if you want to reboot, now. Click "NO ".

Next, launch Notepad, (Start > Run, type in: notepad) copy and paste just the text in blue below in it (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Drivers32]
    "aux "=-

Save this as fix.reg and change the "Save as type" to "All Files" and place it on your desktop. It should look like this: [IMG]
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "Yes" or "OK ". You should receive a message that it was successful. You may delete the file afterwards.

Please locate the ComboFix icon on your desktop.
    Right click and select delete.

    We'll grab an updated copy.

Download Combofix from any of the links below.

    Save it to your desktop.

    Link 1
    Link 2
    Link 3

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
(Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.)
    http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Now if you could please try to run ComboFix again.

[*]Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

    ComboFix runs OK

    Hi Juliet,

Thanks for remembering me. Do I have to set something to generate the e-mail notification? Thanks for the permission to message you. I know you are all volunteers and I appreciate your attention to my problem.

I opened hijackThis and I set that value as you requested.

    The fix.reg also ran successfully.

I downloaded a fresh copy of ComboFix and transferred it to the infected machine. I closed all windows, including HijackThis, as requested by Combo-Fix.

This time Combo-Fix ran fine, with a log window and other feedback.

In your previous post, you suggested installing the recovery console, which never happened because there was no feedback at all from the previous attempt. You did not mention it in the most recent post and the Combo-Fix message said an Internet connection was required for the install. Since I am not yet confident about putting the infected machine back on the net, I declined to install the recovery console.

Please let me know when you think it is safe to reconnect to the Internet. Combo-Fix seems to have broken the grip of the malware on my machine, but I don't know if it remains capable of re-infecting the machine when I reconnect. My clean machine and infected laptop are normally miles apart from each other and I have access to both together for a few hours a day. When it is safe to reconnect the laptop, I should be able to respond much faster to complete this repair.

Here is the ComboFix.txt and the HijackThis report will follow immediately in the next post.

Again, thanks so much for your time.

    Welcome back
Since there was no internet connection you couldn't install recovery console anyway, but, it did run and do what it was supposed to do and that is what we wanted.
If we need to install it we will, no biggie right now.

Now, from looking at the last logs the computer can connect to the internet again.

    We are glad to help.
    Notification for me or you?
At the top of the page is a Thread Tools button, clickon that then click on subscribe to this post.
another window will open and then select subscribe to this topic.
Then yet another window and set it to instant email notification.

    OK, let's continue.

Go to your add/remove programs list and uninstall AskBar, <--dubious reputation.

Your version of Adobe is out of date.

You can obtain the latest version of Adobe Reader from [color= "red"]here[/color], and the latest version of Flash Player from [color= "red"]here[/color].
For more information and links to Adobe updates and downloads click [color= "red"]here[/color].

    NEXT**

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [HotKeysCmds] C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe
(Description: Intel hotkey applet. Unnecessary. Removing this will free up a small amount of system resources.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] \ "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe\" -osboot
(Description: RealPlayer scheduler. Completely unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Portfolio] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\WksSb.exe /AllUsers
(Description: Microsoft Works portfolio tool. If you're not using this, remove it. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Works Update Detection] C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Works Shared\WkUFind.exe
(Description: Checks for updates to MS Works. Unnecessary. Removing this entry will free up some system resources. )

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] \ "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe\ "
(Description: Sun Java update scheduler. Checks for updates. Not necessary. Removing this entry will free up a small amount of system resources.)

    O4 - Global Startup: Adobe Reader Speed Launch.lnk = C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Reader\reader_sl.exe
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

Now reboot your computer to set the registry.

    NEXT**
I'd like for you to run this next online scan to check for remnants or anything that might be hidden.
The below scan can take up to an hour or longer, please be patient.

    *Note
It is recommended to disable onboard antivirus program and antispyware programs while performing scans so no conflicts and to speed up scan time.
Please don't go surfing while your resident protection is disabled!
Once scan is finished remember to re-enable resident antivirus protection along with whatever antispyware app you use.

    Using Internet Explorer, visit http://www.kaspersky.com/service?chapter=161739400

    Other available links
Kaspersky Online Scanner or from here
    http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner

Note: If you are using Windows Vista, open your browser by right-clicking on its icon and select 'Run as administrator' to perform this scan.

Click on the Accept button and install any components it needs.

    • The program will install and then begin downloading the latest definition
      files.
    • After the files have been downloaded on the left side of the page in the Scan section select My Computer.
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while, so be patient and let it run. (At times it may appear to stall)
      * Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
      * Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
      * Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
    • Once the scan is complete, click on View scan report To obtain the report:
    Click on: Save Report As
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select:
    Text file [*.txt]
    Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in
    your reply.

    Hi Juliet,

Things have improved dramatically thanks to your guidance. I didn't realize how dependent I had become on having an Internet connection at home.

    1. The Hijack items were checked, fixed OK and laptop was restarted.

    2. The ATF Cleaner also ran OK. I also ran it to clean up Firefox.

    3. The laptop was reconnected to Internet !!!

    4. Immediately, ZoneAlarm began blocking incoming access attempts. Example:
Packet sent from 96.157.72.1 (DHCP) to 67.180.162.119 (UPD Port 68) was blocked
67.80.162.119 was my IP address for that session.

    5. AVG update connected OK and ran for the first time since the infection began.
AVG ran a full computer scan (about 3.5 hrs). Reported the following infections:

    "C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\_hiokef_.uor.zip "; "Trojan horse Downloader.Generic_c.AOC "; "Moved to Virus Vault "
    "C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\WINDOWS\_hiokef_.uor.zip:\hiokef.uor "; "Trojan horse Downloader.Generic_c.AOC "; "Moved to Virus Vault "

Avg scan required a restart at end.

    6. Adobe Reader 9.1 has been installed. It also required a restart.

    7. Adobe Flashplayer has also been updated.

    8. Kaspersky Online scanner ran OK and found one supicious item (report below).

    9. Latest HJT follows the Kaspersky report.

    Good:

All the normal processes (services) seem to start without error and have their tray icons displayed.

The browser redirects seem to be gone. I haven't browsed much yet.

The DOS prompt window is working again.

    AVG update connects OK.

    Not so good:

The ZoneAlarm firewall is now reporting many blocked packets. This type of alert has never happened before on this machine.

Many like the following appeared every 15 to 20 seconds in bursts 5 to 10 minutes apart.
Packet sent from 65.167.64.142 (UPD Port 11538) to 24.6.115.116 (UPD Port 33436) was blocked

All source IP addresses were different, or appeared at most twice, and target ports were different. All manner of other incoming packets were also detected and blocked (ICMP, FTP, pings). All originated at different IP addresses. Since my IP address is obtained via DHCP, I wonder how all these other machines know about the existence of my machine.

Similar packets are detected and blocked each time I restart and connect to the Internet.

    -----------------

One other suspicious trait persists since this laptop was infected.
There is an unaccountable delay of approximately 1.5 minutes after I
select to "Turn Off" or "Restart" the machine where no activity seems to occur. The System Idle Process has 99 percent of the CPU according to the task manager. The task manager also shows no change in memory allocation. The hardware LEDs show no disk activity during this period. The delay occurs both with the Internet cable plugged in and with it unplugged.

The delay does not occur if I shut the laptop down using "Hibernation" mode. Do you have any ideas about what is going on?

    Welcome back

    Good deal!

    65.167.64.142 <--Sprint
    24.6.115.116 <--ComCast

I really don't think it's an issue with spyware or malware but software on the computer using a calling home feature. If it had been malware you would had known it.

What you can do is when ZoneAlarm shows the alert window place a check mark by "Don't show me this alert again "
When I used Zone it drove me crazy over minor tiddle issues till I did this.

Yes, expected, it's the quarantine folder for ComboFix. We'll remove this shortly.

First thought that comes to mind is onboard security, especially Zone.

Now here you have an Email through Comcast mail residing in your received/inbox?.I'm not a Comcast user so I'm not sure exactly where to tell you where to go and delete this.....But do check.

Please uninstall the "ZoneAlarm Spy Blocker" Toolbar, the new optional feature Spy Blocker included as an optional addition to ZoneAlarm, as it's run by the questionable search engine Ask.com. You can read more about Ask.com
    http://www.benedelman.org/spyware/installa...kjeeves-banner/

Microsoft AntiSpyware should also be uninstalled, because this one is way outdated and not supported anymore. It is called Windows Defender now instead.

Open HijackThis, Click Do a system scan only, checkmark these. Then close all other windows and browsers except HijackThis and press fix checked.

The following are not necessarily spyware/malware, but we suggest you place a check mark next to the following entries, as these programs may be taking up system resources.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] \ "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe\ "
(Description: Adobe reader startup - unnecessarily uses system resources.)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [WorksFUD] C:\Program Files\Microsoft Works\wkfud.exe
    (Unnecessary at bootup)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MoneyStartUp10.0] "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Money\System\Activation.exe "
    (Unnecessary)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [iTunesHelper] "C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe "
    (Unnecessary)

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe "
    (Unnecessary)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSMSGS] "C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe" /background
    (Unnecessary)

    O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [Yahoo! Pager] C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\ypager.exe -quiet
    (Unnecessary)

Now please reboot the computer to set the registry.

Don't miss or skip this next step, this will remove malicious files from quarantine and set a clean restore point.

    • Click START then RUN
    • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the x and the /u, it needs to be there.
    Example below

We might run into an uninstall issue here since your antivirus deleted a couple entries from the folder, not a problem if it does we'll have to go at it manually......just let me know.

Now, post back once more and let me know how the computer is now and if we're ready for preventive tips.

    Hi Juliet,

Done. I can now watch a YouTube clip without interruption.

I have an e-mail folder named "phishy" for suspicious e-mails. There were two e-mails in the folder that claimed to be sent by banks I do business with, but the content was instructing me to use a link embedded in the message. I didn't trust these messages and it looks like my suspicions have been confirmed. They are gone now.

I never used it. I have now taken the time to get rid of it.

FYI: even the latest Adobe reader download also installed an "Adobe.com" application I did not authorize, (unless it was hidden in the fine print). I don't mind free download sites trying to sell me something new. Asking for my approval is the first step toward acceptance. Not asking is the first step toward rejection. 'nuff said.

    Gone.

The Hijack items were checked, fixed OK and the laptop was restarted.

This time Windows installed 8 updates when shut down. All good news.

The services tray now has fewer icons,
1,2. Windows messenger and Yahoo messenger are gone, (and not missed). I can still launch Yahoo messenger from the Start menu when I need it.
    3. A Java icon is gone - it was for some kind of Java environment. I never had it until recently and it doesn't seem necessary for anything.

I ran the Combofix /u command with the net cable unplugged and the anti-virus resident scanner off. It all appeared to work fine.

As for the mysterious shutdown delay, this may only be an annoyance. I used to fear the malware was trying to do something, but there seems to be no detectable activity, like shutdown is just waiting for a time-out. I tried closing the internet connection, unplugging the cable and closing both AVG and ZoneAlarm services manually. With no other applications running before launching the shutdown, it still stopped for a 90 second delay. Hmmm.

Overall, I would say the machine is back to normal. Well done, Juliet. Ready for tips.

If you have the time to entertain a few questions about this episode, I would be grateful for your response.

Does this particular malware have a name, or is it novel? How likely is it that my AVG/ZoneAlarm will stop this one from happening again? This is my first real infection, and I've been on-line since before www. I guess I have lead a sheltered on-line life.

Being a software professional myself, I am curious about how much training and experience is required to become a Malware Analyst and battle these malicious attacks. If you could please give me a reference where I might find more information about this field, or briefly tell me how you got started, I would be very grateful.

    Many thanks.

With the annoyance to shut down, I'll have to go hmmmm to.
There are so many entries to antivirus and firewall, or other security programs, I can't say which or what is causing the delay.
Sometimes it can even be related to computer age. This you will have to monitor to try to find out what or which service or driver controls this.
You can check event viewer or device manager for issues being recorded if any.

    Give this infection a name?
    Yes, we can.
Conficker Worm also known as Downup - W32.Downadup

We hope an updated Antivirus will help to keep your machine protected.
There are so many ways an infection can get onto a computer in todays world, I can't begin to list.

If everyone would be more "sheltered" as you say we could cut down the amount of infections that are out there.

By Private message I'll send a list of free bootcamps/schools that offer HJT training.
Do be aware it can be very time consuming.

Please take the time to read over a few of my preventive tips.

Please navigate to Microsoft Windows Updates and download all the "Critical Updates " for Windows.
