[Resolved] Browser HiJack, Unable to open cmd/regedit

My browser is constantly being hijacked and I can't open cmd/regedit (not even in Windows safe mode). I've been trying to fix this for 2 days already... Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

I've scanned my computer with the following tools but the problems persist:
- Norton Antivirus
- SUPERAntiSpyware
- Spybot
- Ad-Aware
- HiJack This
- cwshredder

Norton and SUPERAntiSpyware were already on my computer before it was infected. They no longer start automatically when reboots. I checked under Services and my Norton Antivirus Auto-Protect Service is still setup to start automatically but it doesn't do that.

Ad-Aware was installed after I discovered the problems and it does start automatically when reboots.

When my broswer is being hijacked, it goes to all kinds of web sites that are some what related to my search keyword in Google. Sometimes, it crashes my IE when trying to redirect.

When I try to open cmd or regedit, my entire desktop goes blank for a few seconds and crashes most of my running programs.

I can't run any *.reg fixes because regedit doesn't work.

I'm using Windows XP Professional SP 3 with I.E. 6 SP 3.

I'm unable to get DDS logs. When I run DDS, I see a black window (probably a cmd prompt window) flashes and closes immediately. Is there anyway to get around this problem so I can get the log files? I tried giving DDS's full path in Start -> Run, same problem.

I tried running ComboFix but it was kind of like DDS, a cmd prompt window opens and closes right away.

I do have a log file from HiJackThis:

Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2

I gave up IE 6 and installed IE 7, now the browser hijack problem is no longer happening, although I'm not sure if the malware/virus is still sitting on my computer or not.

I still can't start cmd and regedit! :(

Unfortunately, I just discovered the browser hijack problem is still here even with IE7. It happens a lot less frequent compared to when I was using IE6. I still haven't find a solution to the cmd and regedit problems yet. Any help will be appreciated.

Hi and welcome

Do this first.

Open Notepad, at the top click on Format
Now uncheck word wrap.

Download Combofix from any of the links below. You must rename it before saving it. Save it to your desktop.

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with our tools
(Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled.)
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html

Double click on Combo-Fix.exe & follow the prompts.

Please allow ComboFix to install, if needed, Windows Recovery Console. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

No Validation is Required.

The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.

** Please Note:
At times ComboFix may appear to stall, please be patient.
• When finished, it will produce a report for you.
• Please post the C:\ComboFix.txt along with a HijackThis log so we can continue cleaning the system.

Please only run the tool once, ty.

Extra note: After you have installed the Recovery Console - if you reboot your computer, right after reboot, you'll see the option for the Recovery Console now as well.
Don't select to run the Recovery Console as we don't need it.
By default, your main OS is selected there. The screen stays for 2 seconds and then it proceeds to load Windows.

You may need several replies to post the requested logs, otherwise they might get cut off.

Juliet, ComboFix does not work on my computer. After I clicked on the renamed Combo-Fix.exe, it installed itself. Then a blue dialog pops up, inside it reads "Please wait. ComboFix is preparing to run." In a couple of seconds, the blue dialog disappeared and nothing happens. I searched my entire hard disk for the ComboFix log file, but there isn't one. :(

P.S. I turned off all my Antivirus/Spyware before running Combo-Fix.exe.

Juliet, I ran ComboFix in Safe Mode and it is the same. The blue dialog disappeared in a few seconds.

After I clicked on Combo-Fix.exe, I didn't touch the computer for about 30 minutes in case it "was running just appeared to be stalled" like you said. There was no log file still. I really don't think it was running. I cannot open cmd on my computer, I suspect that has something to do with ComboFix not working on my computer. Thanks.

Magoo, thanks for the information. I will try to do some research on win32vitro. I'm really really really hoping I don't have to reformat and reinstall everything.

Welcome back

C:\qoobox\quarantined_files.txt <-- is this file present? If so -- please post its contents.

How about c:\Combofix\combofix.txt <-- is it here?...If found post the contents of the log.

Save these instructions to wordpad/notepad or print them out, while some of the fix will have to be done in safemode this page will not be available for you to follow.

Download SDFix or from Here and save it to your Desktop

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive% (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following
:
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows
icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.
• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.cmd to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load
your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the
forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the SDFix Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

Thank you for not giving up on this!

I searched my entire hard disk and I do not have quarantined_files.txt and combofix.txt.

Under C:\Qoobox, I only have 5 folders, no txt.

Under C:\ComboFix, I have 20 batch files, no txt.

I discovered something about my cmd problem. I found some files with weird names (e.g. CF5890.exe) on my computer. If I double click it, a command prompt is opened. If I rename the file to cmd.exe, then I can't open a command prompt. I feel like something is constantly killing "cmd.exe" process on my computer. Anyway, this is how I got SDFix to run. Double clicking on RunThis.bat doesn't do anything on my computer. I opened a command prompt by double clicking e.g. CF5890.exe, then I ran RunThis.bat from the command prompt.

Here comes the log files...

How's my computer? It's all funky now. After rebooting, most the time I only see my wall paper, I've to reboot again and again until it will show my desktop. Also, a new problem I discovered is my right click menu -> Edit does not work on batch files, if I select right click menu -> Edit on a batch file, my whole screen freezes and flashes just like when I tried to open cmd or regedit. However, I can use right click menu -> Edit to open a TXT file in notepad. My IE 7 is still being HiJack from time to time.

Here is OTMoveIt3 log.

"Ctrl+Alt+Del to open task manager. At the top click on File New Task(run)
type in cmd "

This doesn't work. I opened a command prompt from clicking on e.g. CF3060.exe and ran "ComboFix.exe /CFScript.txt" by command line. Same behavior as before, it installed, then a blue command window flashes and nothing more happens.

Did any of the earlier log files point to anything?

Unfortunately no.

What we can do is continue to try a few other tools in a hope to identify something.

Download Gmer's mbr.exe from here to your desktop
http://www2.gmer.net/mbr/mbr.exe
click the downloaded file to run the scan (a window will open briefly, then close).
The scan will create a mbr.log on your desktop - please copy/paste those contents in your next reply.

NEXT**
Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan.
1. Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
2. Click Start
3. When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
4. Click Start
5. Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
6. Click Scan
Wait for the scan to finish
7. Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
8. Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

In your next reply post:
mbr.log
EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt

mbr.log:

Stealth MBR rootkit detector 0.2.4 by Gmer, http://www.gmer.net

device: opened successfully
user: MBR read successfully
kernel: MBR read successfully
user & kernel MBR OK

Unable to run ESET Online Scanner. I went to my internet options and changed to security setting to minimal. I clicked installed ActiveX Control when prompted but I just keep seeing a blank dialog. I checked C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files and nothing was downloaded. I've no idea why.

Welcome back

The infection is stopping/blocking everything we try to do.

Let's attempt to repair some settings.

1. Please download Dial-A-Fix from one of the following mirrors:
2. Extract the zip file to your desktop.
3. Double click Dial-a-Fix.exe to start the program.
4. Press the green double checkmark box (Looks like this: [IMG])
5. UNcheck "Empty Temp Folders ", as well as "Adjust Time/Date" in the prep section. The prep section should then look like this:
6. When the window looks like this, press the GO button in the bottom of the window.
7. Exit/Close Dial-A-Fix

Download to your Desktop FixPolicies.exe, a self-extracting ZIP archive from here: http://downloads.malwareremoval.com/BillCastner/FixPolicies.exe

* Double-click FixPolicies.exe.
* Click the "Install" button on the bottom toolbar of the box that will open.
* The program will create a new Folder called FixPolicies.
* Double-click to Open the new Folder, and then double-click the file within: Fix_Policies.cmd.
* A black box will briefly appear and then close.

Now please try to run the scans again.

I ran Dial-A-Fix and FixPolicies.exe.

Still cannot run ComboFix and still cannot use ESET Online Scanner. They behaved just like before. Here is another HiJack This log, I don't know if it is of any use.
