    Hello,

I have two major problems with XP which I'm desperately hoping someone could help with me with, I cannot find any fix.

    My PC Spec:

    MSI K7T266 Pro (MS-6380)
    AMI Bios 1.8
    VIA Chipset
    AMD Athlon 1.4GHz
    256MB DDR266 RAM (Latency= 2.5)
    Geforce 2 MX4/40
    Maxtor 80GB HDD
    IBM 2x120GB HD
    ATA-100 RAID Card
    LG DVD-ROM
    CD-RW
    Pioneer DVD-R
    3Com NIC
    56K Modem
    On-Board Sound
    Windows XP Pro SP1

I have newely reinstalled XP and I have noticed these errors in Event Viewer:

    Event Type: Error
    Event Source: Browser
    Event Category: None
    Event ID: 8032
    User: N/A
    Computer: Client
Description: The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{XXXXXXX-9F03-42B2-AB84-12EEEFD572E9}. The backup browser is stopping.
    Data: 0000: 0000007a

    ===============

The browser service has failed to retrieve the backup list too many times on transport \Device\NetBT_Tcpip_{XXXXXXX-9F03-42B2-AB84-12EEEFD572E9}. The backup browser is stopping.

I have found this MSKB article:
    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;314872

However, the file and print sharing is enabled and installed. I have also tried removing Client for Microsoft Networks and File and Print Sharing, and then installing them again, but this doesn't help. What else can I try? Has anyone else come across this problem?

Also getting errors in the application part of Event Viewer which say things like:

"Windows was unable to unload your class registry file, windows will wait for this to be freed to unload it"

Also that services are running and were unable to be closed and that these should be run as local service or network service users. However, even on a clean install of XP it still gives these errors in event viewer. How do I stop these from appearing? What services should be running as local service/local system?

    Grateful of any help.

    Thanks

    Tell us more!

    Are you on a network?

    Broadband or dialup?

If broadband do use a router or just a cable/dsl modem?

Boot to safe mode and do the following.

If stand alone computer go to services and disable both DHCP CLIENT and DNS CLIENT and stop both services.

Then clear (save if you want) the event logs! This will give clear slate in full mode.

Boot back to full, check logs immediately! Ignore the error about event log in safe mode.

Now recheck for problem. Post event log errors back to us if still problem.

Disabling the DHCP and Client will also work on a network "IF" this is a normal work station and has no special requirements!

Sorry yes, forgot a few details.

Network of 3 PCs - 2 XP SP1 and 1 W2K SP3 Server. All connected with a Netgear RP114 Router and Cable internet connection plugged into WAN port on Router. The other PCs are working fine. The router is a DHCP itself and obviously gives out IPs in the range of 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.4 etc

    Ok!

Looks like you can and should turn off DHCP an DNS Client on this station.

Before you turn these off do this, if you have turned them off already, turn them back on long enough to the following. Then back off.

    nbtstat "“R Keep the case
    ipconfig /flushdns

Then clear the log as per my last msg.

Some event log messages can be ignored. You have notifications, warnings and errors. You need to pinpoint the errors and understand the state. A few are ok! The event log will never stay empty.

Below are some things that will help you tweak and cleanup services. When you go to BlackViper make special note about items that should or should not apply to a networked computer.

D/L and install Startup control Panel.

Gives total control of startup including removing. Address all 5 startup methods.

    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

Also visit here for tweaking via the services

    http://members.internettrash.com/me...n/xptweak2.html

    The best site

    www.blackviper.com or www.blkviper.com

Go thru these and get back with a final state.

    Mike

PS It is now 6:45 am US eastern time. Headed to shower. Will check back from work.

To stop the browser error, just stop and then disable browser service. You shouldn't need it on your network. But it is more of an informational thing than a real problem in your situation.

In fact, lots of the warnings and errors you will see in the event logs are nothing to worry about unless something isn't working.

Also - it will be lots easier to track down event log errors if you post all the information. Easy enough to do. When you open an event log error, there is a small icon just below the up/down arrows. Click it and you get a text-only copy of the event in your clipboard. Just paste it here.

lol yes sorry, due to this problem haven't had a chance to check back until now.

I have now actually fixed the problem by changing my NIC to a completely different one (Realtek RTL8039) and then resetting up TCP/IP - by a netsh command - as it can't be uninstalled and reinstalled.

However, what I can't understand is how after a rebuild (which is where all this started from) my NIC stops working correctly after I've been using it for quite a while with no problems at all, plus even different 3Com NICs still caused problems with network browsing/accessing/copying/etc.... could something seriously be up with my board that cause it to be imcompatibile with it?

Still, I know I should have copied and pasted the errors direct from event viewer, but when I originally posted I was at work and was just trying to remember the messages. I realise that it is very difficult to have a system with no event log messages at all, but I know it is possible. My work PC runs and works like a dream with no problems at all (it's a really good build) and has no warnings or errors in the event log. I'm sure there is a way to fix quite a lot of them, as MS coded them into XP they are there for a purpose.

    Anyway, from your suggestions:

Turning off DHCP and DNS is not possible cause if I do I loose internet access via the router and also don't get an IP from the router to be able to do things on the network or again browse the internet.

When I tried turning off the browser service, I could no longer browse network neighbourhood - which I really need to be able to do.

I have taken screenshots of the errors/warnings I have left to investigate, hopefully do something about:

These happen everytime I logoff (or 99% of times):
    http://www.simonprr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Registry unloaded - ID1517.jpg
    http://www.simonprr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/Unload classes file - ID1524.jpg

I have seen this before, but do not know anything about it. What is DCOM? How does this matter?
    http://www.simonprr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/DCOM error - ID10010.jpg

    What on earth is MSDTC?
    http://www.simonprr.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/MSDTC - ID4097.jpg

I was also thinking that each event log error has an ID, surely each is documented? Will MS Technet give me a list or something like that?

Thanks for the help/suggestions. Hope you have an insight into these!

    Cheers :)

Msdtc something I can't imagine you need!

    http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/library/en-us/westudio/htm/_MSDTC.asp

First the inability to stop the services Newt and I reccomended is not normal. If the router is the dhcp server?????????

Anyway if it works after we fix the shut down then I would not bother.

As to why the NIC quit! Who knows I have seen it before usually on reinstall overlay. Have to switch brands to fix it. The card that came out works in another computer. May even work in same cpu after removing other brand of NIC! Go figure!

Send me the startup list from the StartupList program I sent.

Did you visit the Black Viper site and look at configuring services? These 2 sites are the best for understanding what a service is and whether or not it should be disabled manual or automatic.

Look at your services and reconcile with what these 2 sites reccomend.

For me to make a reccomendation I would need to see your services. Export the list, copy and paste it back to us. With the startup list also.

Ah thats what MSDTC is! Well actually, my server is running SQL Server 2000 and I've been sort of teaching myself it - so that could be a reason for that.

Yes all routers I know of give clients (PCs on the LAN) IPs so they can connect via the WAN port on the router to the internet.

When I'm home from work I will send you the startup list and services, however there is nothing different in there really, it's a fresh build.

I will look into those sites shortly, however this one: http://members.internettrash.com/me...n/xptweak2.html
    Gives me a 404 Not Found. :(

Also during this I have been trying different BIOS settings. However I've searched before for a site to explain actually what each BIOS setting actually does! I have AMI BIOS. Could you suggest a site possibly?

    Cheers ;)

5:10 am I traveling for bussiness today for the next 3 days. Will not get back home untill Wednesday night or Thursday. I will try to take a minute from my clients office to check in. So post back anyway. I will visit 4 different locations so I may not be able to get back to you often or for long.

Hopefully Newt and the others have a few more ideas or input.

BIOS I do not believe will effect this problem. Something is running struggling and/or searching trying to connect or setup after bootup completes. Make sure vidieo and bios shadowing/caching is on and turn off S.M.A.R.T. It can be turned back on if you suspect a HD problem.

A service of some type is trying to do something either unsuccessfully or something. I reccomend researching the services as I pointed out earlier.

If you feel you can reinstall it successfully then I would uninstall SQL for this trouble shoot to see if it is a problem. And any other non typical app.

If you will reread prior messages I asked if there were any non typical apps running. Well everyone does not run SQL at home. Humor me and also for these purposes uninstall the Norton virus scanner system works and firewall.

Do these uninstalls in safe mode then search for remnants and remove from hd. They are hard to get rid of.

Download install but do not run untill safe mode the below Registry cleaners to finish the cleanup for these.

Registry and System cleaners (do no dupe file cleanup)

    RegCleaner http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/regcleaner.shtml

    EasyClean1.7 <http://gswi.com/downloads.htm>

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware

You never told me specifically if you were a DOMAIN or workgroup.

If I had all the info I asked for I would not be so in the dark.

Wrong! All routers do not nessesarilly handle DHCP etc. This can be turned off on the router if it is configured properly and a station can do the DHCP or all stations can be configured staticly.

Yes the link I sent is now bad. But we on the BBS have been using same for sometime so it just went bad.

In general I think your problem is as I state above, some service struggling OR some kind of disk problem. Not nessesarilly a physical problem. You said it in your first post something like a scandisk or virus scan in the background.

If you can get me all the info I asked for we can either fix this or make an informed decision if to reinstall or not and how.

Ok, but you are not completely reading my messages either.

BIOS could affect things like this, may do, may not. Still, what difference does SMART for HD make?

I do not think this a problem with services - none are failing. These errors aren't pointing to failing services at all. As I said before this is a NEW build so doesn't have un-standard configuration.

As I also said SQL Server is on my Server not on this PC! There are no other major applications installed such as firewall/virus scan. They are on the server - which doesn't have any problems!

To answer your questions, yes I'm in a workgroup. I have answered all your questions so you shouldn't be in the dark!

Your right not ALL routers do DHCP, but MOST actually do!

Thanks for your help, but as it is working now anyway I think we can leave this problem as it is.
