Recently I tried Star Office 5.2 and after a few days, I decided to un-install and go back to MS Office 2000. After the un-install using their un-installer I clicked on one of my IE URL shortcuts on the desktop and instead of opening up IE6 I got the MS File download...

So I right clicked one of these desk top Icons and went to properties and associated it with IE and clicked apply and then closed the window...then when I clicked on the desktop URL short cut again the same thing, MS File Downloader opens up again...if I right click one of these URL files and associate it with Netscape 4.7 it opens up and I get a red X dialogue box that roughly reads "Cannot find the file...(the path to the URL is listed here)...(or pone of its components). Make sure the path and the file name are correct and that all required libraries are available...when I click okay, the desired web page opens up no problem but for some of these they show poorly due to liking IE better...

I have written posts on the newsgroups at MS and searched their knowledge database, searched the Star Office site and emailed Star Office, but no response...grrrrrrrrrrr...

    :(

I am running W2K with Admin rights...any help would be appreciated...:D

Since it probably isn't too many on your desktop, just delete the bad ones and recreate.

    this has me perplexed...

Have you tried repairing IE through the control panel or system info?

    it didnt work...

I tried what you suggested by going into the control panel and then add/remove programs and did a fix of IE, but to no avail...after this I then tried to create a URL shortcut on my desktop and when I tried to open it, I then got the MS File Download window...

So I then tried to ininstall IE6 and associated thse type of files to Netscate v6 and then I re-downloaded IEv6 and made sure that it checked to see if it was the default web browser in the

Tools>Internet Options>Programs>check box for IE to check to see whether its the default browser....

This really has me perplexed and baffled...

I dont have the slightest idea as to why this keeps happening...Any other suggestions??????????????

What file is trying to be downloaded when the window appears?

Are your virus defs up to date, and have you done a full virus scan?

Do you have a file named "sversion.ini" in your Windows directory, if so delete it and than make IE the default browser again.

    the problem continues...

okay in response to aleekat: virus defs are up-to-date, I use Norton's and update them daily and run a scan everyday...

The following info is directly off the file download window that appears:

File download>>>>Yahoo.url from c:\documents and settings\administrator\desktop Would you like to open the file or save it to your computer? then the buttons open\save\cancel\help using the open button continues to reopen MS file download, repeatedly; clicking cancel closes the window and the rest are self-explanatory…

I used yahoo as a test...it will always say the name of the URL I had saved to the desktop from the web...

In response to goddesz1: I used find files and found a file named "sversion.ini" and deleted it, checked to make sure that IE would check to see if it was the default web browser and then re-started the comp and the same problem continues....

Okay I decided to check something. I logged off as administrator and logged onto a guest account I created for when some of my friends come over, so if they wanted to surf, I wouldn’t worry about them accidentally messing something up, since some of them are average users…now when I use this guest account and open IEv6 and go to the yahoo main page and then create a URL shortcut to yahoo and close IE and then click on the shortcut on the desktop it opens up with no problems…gggrrrooowwwwllllllll

Like I said I am baffled...:( :p

    Any more suggestions folks...

Don't know to much about uninstalling StarOffice other than it seems to be a bit tricky and problematic if not done in a particular way. Additionally it must be done for each user on a log-in basis. Perhaps that is why when logged in as a different user the problem disappears.

This smacks of a botched or incomplete unistall. You onviously still have some registry associations left behind.

Can't help you out a whole lot at the moment as I have a sick computer on the other table [9 virus'] which is moaning for my attention. Perhaps something useful can be gotten from these google links that may help in the meantime. This is not a refined search so you may be able to pinpoint/pare_it_down to your problem a bit more by adding additonal keyword filters.

    StarOffice!!!Smaroffice

I will try to get back to this, when time permits.
