Hi, i reinstalled windows and now whenever i surf the internet after a few minutes my internet stops working for about 1 minute or 2... and then starts working again for a few mineutes and then stops again... and so on.

I called my ISP but they had no idea why... i got a really stupid technician on the phone.
They said maybe i got some firewall or something thats bothering the internet, well i don't have program like that.

Im using Windows 98 SE and i don't have a firewall installed or any program of that sort.
All i got installed is KazaaLite, Emule, Flashget, Norton Antivirus, Winzip and ICQ.

    Any suggestions what to do?
    Thanks.

Oh i almost forgot im using a DSL internet connection.

    DSL not working

Do you have a router installed? I assume you are using an ethernet connection to the router/dsl modem.

Very unwise - you clearly like to live dangerously :D I suggest you install a firewall ASAP - Kerio is highly recommended and is freeware. ZoneAlarm is an alternative, also freeware.

Have you run a full system virus scan recently - and are your virus definitions bang up todate?

With the programs you have installed, with the exception of NAV it is very likely that you have spyware aboard your m/c.

Download Spybot and AdAware , update their reference files and run Spybot before AdAware.

Yes i'm using an ethernet connection to my modem.

And i don't think i need a firewall... why would some1 want to hack into my pc...
The firewall doesn't help me a all... all it does is take up some memory on my pc.

I'll download spybot... but i already got adaware.. although i don't remember naking a scan lately, i'll do that now.

Someone may want to get into your machine so they can use it to send stuff to someone else and make it look like it CAME FROM YOU. And all without your knowledge

    I have to fully agree.

I do not very often say or even like to say this but robi, Your thinking not quite correct

A firewall keeps Me, Jane and John Doe OUT of YOUR Machine.

And Anti-Virus should be set to checke e-mail IN & OUT.

And just a Router is not enough either. They are only one way ( incoming ). That helps but still is not enough. A good Two WAY Firewall is needed.

A two way Firerwall also gives YOU AS THE USER full control of what goes OUT. What goes out can get back in.

    As to the hangups.

Ok, i'll check those programs, but i guess my version of windows is messed up...

About the firewall i used to have one 2 years ago... then i stopped using one... i haven't seen any difference between using it and not using it.

Also i noticed that icq does keep working ALL the time.
So the internet doesn't fully stop working, i just can't surf, and also when i d/l the latest version of IE the download stoped for a few minutes...

But icq seems to keep working all the time...

*Also kazaa lite keeps working and the internet stops for 1 minute about every 5 minutes.
