My computer was running perfectly but I decided to change over to another ISP due to faster internet speeds and better pricing. My old provider duly stopped my broadband and I was connected to my new provider.

My wireless laptop in another room received the new broadband perfectly but for whatever reason my wired desktop computer failed to receive the connection even though all lights on the modem were on. My Skype phone is accessing phonecalls through the modem so all is well there. My desktop computer, which is also connected to the same modem, simply fails to open any browser I've tried (Firefox, Internet Explorer 8, Opera). The lights on the port at the back of my desktop into which the ethernet cable goes indicates by the traffic signals that all is well there also. I can also send and receive emails through my Outlook Express.

I then installed a wireless connection adapter to a usb port on the desktop which relieves me of the necessity for wires on my desktop and found that this works well for me. I'm puzzled, however, by the failure of my machine to work from the wired connection and am wondering if anyone out there has any solution which I'm failing to find at the moment. By the way, I've contacted the support staff at my new providers but despite going through various tests on the machine they can find no fault either with the modem (which is receiving and sending the broadband) or the desktop computer. The problem persists whether I use my old modem or whether I use the new one sent by my new ISP.

As I've said, I'm now receiving the broadband data from the modem via a wireless connection adapter inserted into one of my usb ports but am puzzled as to why my wired connection which worked perfectly with my former ISP doesn't now work with the new provider.

    Many thanks.

IE Tools-> Options->Connection tab->LAN Settings button....Make sure nothing is checked inside there.

    No luck there, I'm afraid.

From a command prompt, run ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt and paste the contents of the text file here.

I typed in ipconfig /all > ipconfig.txt at the command prompt (and also copy/pasted) but got no results. I then typed ipconfig/all and attached an image of the results.

I've changed one or two of the settings in the last file I sent, so here's how things are now (see attached). Apparently two my previous settings, such as subnet mask and ip address, were conflicting with one another according to a windows pop-up. I am, of course, accessing the internet on this desktop computer via the wireless adapter (BT VOYAGER) in one of the usb ports. The fully wired arrangement fails to do the job so I'm making do with this wireless arrangement.

    Thanks, Arie.

The TCP/IP settings were indeed the problem. Unfortunately the DNS Server addresses were still the ones from my former ISP so I phoned the support guys at my new ISP and got the correct ones. After I changed the settings I opened my browser and was then able to access the web.:)

All is well now, and thank you very much for your support. It is much appreciated.
