I have created and used a briefcase between my Desktop running Win 2000 and my Laptop running ME for over a year now. They are linked over my company's Ethernet network. Suddenly I am unable to update the files on my notebook. The update function goes out to look for the differences between the briefcases and never returns. I can create a new briefcase and send all of the files across, but the update function will not work for the new briefcase either. I recently updated IE and the Media Player on my 2000 machine. Is there new code in this that is messing me up? Do I need an ME update too? If so I will be going to XP on the Laptop. Is there a problem between 2000 and XP I should know about? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.:mad::mad:

2000 and XP play well together.

Can't offer you much help with ME except to suggest that changing the OS is probably a very good idea. But if you do, make it a clean XP install since ME is the one OS that often gives real problems if you try the upgrade route.

    XP Upgrade

My laptop is an HP model, and I received the XP upgrade CD directly from them. How do I do a clean install with an upgrade CD? Doesn't the beast balk and refuse to continue if it doesn't find Windows already present? If I'm not deluded, I seem to recall some variable you can alter which will allow a clean install from the upgrade disk. I remember having a problem with a hung machine during an upgrade a few years back. I can't afford Microsquat's ridiculous fee for a full blown "new" XP version, so I am hoping this is true.

The specific will depend on exactly what CD they shipped you. If it is a normal XP upgrade it will probably only need to "see" the ME install disk at some point to prove you have a licensed OS you are upgrading.

If ME and XP are both HP things rather than regular OS CDs, then I really don't know but suspect you might have problems.

I'd say this was a good question for HP tech support. Ask if you can just do a fresh install with the XP CD and insert your ME one as proof-of-purchase at some point.
