I know that I have read about this before, but for the life of me, I can't remember what it says about why it happens.

Lots of times when browsing, I see places where pictures & stuff should be, but they aren't. There is just a box with a red X. Can someone refresh my memory on this, so I can fix it maybe?

Running 98SE, IE5.5SP2 with additional updates.

I have Pop-Up Stopper companion running. The way I have it configured, all it is supposed to block is the pop-up's & pop-unders.

    Miz,

Thanks for the link. I will check all of that out & see if I have stuff set right or not. :)

    Thanks youall. Yep, I'm a Southerner. :D

    Ok.

I have checked out everything. There does not seem to be anything amiss anywhere. Show all pictures is checked.

I can't even find this Toggle Images.exe where it said it was supposed to be.

Another resolution that is redundent since I already have 5.5SP2.

    So what now guys?

This box with red X is happening in OE as well as IE & nothing seems to be amiss anywhere that I can find that is a suggested problem by any of the pages I was referred to.

My file associations for gifs, jpg's & etc have not been changed either. They are all set to be opened by Iexplore as they should be.

    Deloris,
I you shut down the Pop-Up Ad-Stopper, exit and then re-start
IE explorer, do you still get the same problem ?
Sometimes, these Ad-Stoppers get confused with the image sizes
they have to check to decide whether to show/not show an image.
    regards

Deloris--If you have Toggle Images.exe it should be in your Links. You can usually find Links in Favorites or by creating a Links toolbar. Right click on a blank grey spot to the right of your other toolbars in IE and click on "Links ".
I am sorry to hear that not one of all the ideas in those two references I suggested worked.

OK, I did as you said Welshjim. Toggle Images.exe still is not there.

I have discovered what might be the problem. Actually my husband reminded me of this little tid-bit.

I made some pictures and sent them to myself. gifs & jpg's. Deleted the files after sending them, so that my computer would not be re-creating the existing images on my computer. They displayed just fine upon receipt.

Now here is the possible reason that some pics are not displaying, even on web pages.

Gifs & jpg's made with software that uses a four color spectrum will not display with a browser that uses the three color spectrum to decipher them.

RGB is three color, & uses red, yellow & blue like printer cartridges do. The pics made with the four color spectrum for some reason do not display in the three color RGB that the browser reads. I can't remember what the four color spectrum is called, but it uses the same three colors as the RGB plus the additional color of Magenta.

The pics I made & sent to myself were made in the RGB three color spectrum, therefore displayed just fine.

I have one more test to perform. I believe I can make some in the four color with one of my programs. I will do that & send them to myself & see what happens.

    Re: CYMK vs RBG

Interested in your results... I create using CYMK in Illustrator and use the 'save for web' command to convert to GIF or JPG. Haven't had the problem under IE 5.0 of not being able to see them in the browser. Perhaps when I do this Illustrator automatically converts to RGB?

Well, ya know what? I've never tried to create in CYMK before, so it may take me some time to figure out how to do it. :D

PSP has a CYMK converter preferences dialog box, but I haven't figured out how to do anything with that format yet. Maybe I should read the book. Reckon? :)

    Hate reading manuals. :D

I can't afford Photoshop or illustrator. The best I've got is PSP, and what it can do, & can't do. :)

Will let ya know how I make out, if I do. :)

Well, I haven't managed to create a CMYK with PSP. Guess I'm just a dummy. :D

Will try merlin's suggestion. If that don't do it, I guess I will have to just live with it. :D

    PSP -

Head to KaZaa Lite ++ or ShareZaa. PSP is a nice program but Illustrator combined with Photoshop is a killer combination.

Anything that says Adobe is a fortune. That's why I have PSP. :)

Dial up is a slow go, and takes forever just to download a few MB's. Can't get cable or DSL out where I am.

Guess I'll just have to do without the best. "sigh "

    More on the red box...

This is from Fred Langa's column, which I heartily commend for everyone's subscription at www.langa.com : Fred has forgotten more about computers and computing then most of us ever learned, and it's a free subscription!

    9) "Image on a Web Page Appears As a Large Red X "

This reader sent two emails in quick succession--- he solved his own IE6
problem before I ever had a chance to read his first message!

Fred, Great newsletter -- I have been a subscriber since it
    started.

Maybe you could give me a direction on a problem I am having
with IE 6. My system runs Windows 98SE and I upgraded the
browser several months ago. It works fine on the internet, but
when I try to view pages offline it won't show .GIF images. I
have even tried to directly view a .GIF file by opening it
with IE (which used to work). All I see is the placeholder
box. (That's your "Red X ", Deloris...) It will show .JPG images fine offline. I have all of the
updates that MS has offered for the browser and for Win 98SE.

This is a problem now that some help files are written in
HTML... I can't see the images within those files. Thanks for
any light you might be able to shed on this weird problem.
    Tucker Wiard

    ===== (a short while later) ====

Fred: I wrote to you this morning about IE6 not displaying .GIF pictures offline. It turned out to be a setting in the registry and I thought you might wish to share the info. The setting

    HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.gif

"content type" was incorrectly set to "image/jpeg" instead of the correct "image/gif ". Changing this setting made everything work correctly. I used your suggestions to others to use Google to search the MS information base. The article for this fix was #307239. Keep up the great work on yournewsletter. --
    -Tucker

Thank for sharing the answer, Tucker!

The issue is generally described as "Image on a Web Page Appears As a Large Red X" and can affect both GIF and JPG images. The fix is fully described at support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;307239

    Mark,

Your link & pip's link took me to the same page. Haven't gotten a chance to check that out yet, but will tomorrow when my brain is fresher. :)

One does need to take time away from these critters occasionally in order to remain sane. :D

Thanks everyone. Maybe I will find the solution soon. Hope so. If not, I will just have to live with it. :)

    OK guys,

I finally got around to checking out that Microsoft fix for this in the HKEY_Classes_Root in the registry.

The setting for .jpg in my registry was not set right according to the way MS said it should be, so maybe now that I've re-set it, it will work right.

    We shall see.
