On the same day both of my CD drives have become unusable. When I go to "my computer" both drives show as being installed. On the CD drive- "D" if I insert a disk the power light comes on then tells me to "please insert a disk ", nothing happens beyond that. If I click on properties the power light for the drive will come on and then it stays on. I have to go to the task manager and click on "end task" several times till it finally will stop. On the DVD/CD-RW drive again by going to "my computer" with a CD in the drive it will ask me to insert a disk. If I click on properties for that drive the power light for it comes on and stays on and I have to force the computer off by pressing the power button. I have tried several disks both the same problem will occur. Only changes on system was a Windows update KB978706. I tired uninstalling it just in case but no difference
I have gone to update driver for both drives but it tells me no updates.
Using WIndows XP home - service pack 3, 1.26GB ram
Under Computer management properties, both drives are shown as enabled.
Wondering where I should go from here.

Maybe a dust storm blew in and dirtied the heck out of the lenses in the drives.
