"Windows cannot access the specified, device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item. "

    Hello CaJazzman,

Sounds as if windows is trying to access a program that's set to start up on boot. Compare your startup items against what actiually is running after startup. This could also be a OS "call" process, like the built in defrag, or notepad.

Is there any more information other than "Windows cannot access the specified, device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permission to access the item. "?

    Regards - Charles

    Hi CaJazzman and welcome.

Not quite enough information there to make any solid predictions/suggestions for a fix.

    - if you get the error after the Windows GUI starts, you could do start~run~msconfig and use selective startup. Go into the startup tab and uncheck everything that is there then OK and reboot. If it starts without that error then add items back one at a time until you find the problem item and post back with details.

    - otherwise, do start~run~eventvwr.msc and look in both your application and system event logs for a likely looking error or warning. When you find it, open the entry, click on the icon below the up/down arrows (sends a text copy to your clipboard) and then paste that into a reply here.

K, I went and did the Run and msconfig, and then to startup, and found if I uncheck, nwiz.exe, that I can start without any problems, but if its checked then I have problems. I did a search on my pc, and nothing was found with that name. Now what can I do? Please help, this old man out. Thx.

    Hi Ca,

    Now what can I do?

From this site on nwiz http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist_n.htm

    Recommendation :
If you have not used any of the special nView features, you can disable this item on the Startups tab of The Ultimate Troubleshooter. If you do use some of the special nView features, on the other hand, then leave this Startup item alone.

You seem to be indicating that no problems once past bootup, so unless you're using nwiz "special" feature, ignore it and keep it unchecked.

EDIT: While you're in this site, look up your startups, you may find some that are either useless or can be invoked on demand - when you need them - via an icon.

    Regards - Charles
