This week, I power on my laptop and Windows appears to be loading. The scrolling green bar, windows logo, user sign in and desktop all appear. However, the desk top screen is frozen. I cannot launch any programs and must do a forced shut down. This will occur for 3 or 4 power ups in a row then Vista will load properly the desktop will be active and I can launch all programs and serf the internet. However, after just 1-2 hrs of operation, my internet speed drops to a crawl. Upon closing IE, I find the desktop frozen and must do a forced shut down. Sometimes, the desktop remains active after closing a faltering IE connection and I can launch and use programs for another 30 mins or so then a program will suddenly freeze and again I have to force a shut down.
Safe mode and Safe Mode with Networking function normally.
    Trouble shooting I have done:
    Full anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-malware scans in Safe Mode,clean.
    System restore.
    Disk clean up.
    Defragged disk.
Check disk and repair bad sectors etc
    Examined Device Manager,everything working properly.
Checked with ISP and all is normal.
Nothing new added nor any changes made to the computer for about a month. The computer is only 5 mos old, not used heavily, everything is updated, and all scans are done regularly.
I would really appreciate your help.

Hi timmins. Try following these steps to make your computer faster. :)

    1. Click Start< Control Panel< Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs that you dont use.
    2. In Control Panel under Programs and Features click the link that says turn windows features on or off and uncheck all the checkboxes except for Games, Microsoft .NET Framework 3.0, Windows Ultimate Extras and click ok when you are done. (If you use a Windows Feature that is listed then don't uncheck its checkbox)
    3. Download and run ATF Cleaner and select all the checkboxes in the program then hit the empty selected button, http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html.
    4. Disable any Windows Services that you don't use by following Black Vipers Services Guide.
    5. Download and run Auslogics Disk Defrag from here, http://auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/download.
    6. Do you have Windows Vista Service Pack 1 installed? If you don't then you should install it since the service pack will fix bugs in Vista and speed up the operating system.
    7. Try shutting down all backround programs that are running in the system tray in the taskbar. Does your computer still slow down after shutting down all backround programs?

Let me know if your computer is faster after performing the above steps.

Thank you for your help. Laptop came with SP1 and was "Decrapified" upon set up, so no unused programs remain to be uninstalled. I will try your other suggestions and let you know what happens.

As far as stopping programs from loading on bootup, I use
"Startup Inspector ". Not to techie, easy to use.

Allows you to stop programs from loading during bootup.
You can find it here -
