I installed Windows XP on the first partition of a hard drive that's got two partitions. After I've finished installing all of my apps & software & updates onto the C drive I just noticed that Windows has put boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM & ntldr on the E drive, NON-BOOT partition & made that partition the primary partition.

Can anyone walk me through what I have to do to move those files to the C drive & make the C drive's partition the primary partition without losing all my data or installing Windows all over please?

    Thanks!

Just in case anyone does a search & needs the answer to this, I figured it out for myself. Here's what I did:

    1) Boot to another drive (or pull drive & mount as USB drive). You need to have access to the drive while it's not running the OS.
    2) *** NOTE *** Make sure you're doing this step to the correct drive!!
From command line, navigate to the NON BOOT hard drive & do "attrib -SHR boot.ini" (Remove System, Hidden, Read Only attributes).
    3) Modify boot.ini with WordPad changing both entries to "partition(1) ".
    4) Save boot.ini (If you cannot save file, make sure you did #2 correctly).
    5) From command line do "attrib +SHR boot.ini" (Set System, Hidden, Read Only attributes).
    6) Move boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM & ntldr to C:\ (You may need to set Windows Explorer to be able to see system files).
    7) Download Partition Master for free from here:
    http://www.partition-tool.com/personal.htm
    8) Install Partition Master & run the program.
    9) Set C partition to Primary partition.
    10) Set C partition to Active partition, which also sets other partition to non-active at the same time.
    11) Apply changes. Shut down system.
    13) Put the drive back where it belongs. Boot up to the correct drive!

That's it. ONLY 13 steps! Follow them VERY carefully because this IS dangerous & WILL make your system non-functional if done wrong. Be careful & it WILL work. If you don't try things, you'll never learn things. I've used Partition Master many times. It is free, easy to use & works great.
