    Boot.ini should be like the following to work right.
    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS
    [operating systems]
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /noguiboot
    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
    Some way it was changed today.
    [boot loader]
    timeout=0
    default=C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT
    [operating systems]
    C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT= "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" /cmdcons
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS= "Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect /noguiboot
    Today I could only boot into "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console ". It would only boot to the Recovery Console and not let me go anywhere else. It took me quite awhile to find what was wrong. I changed it back and now it boots as I want it. I ran Virus scan and Malware scan and found nothing. Maybe someone has had this problem.

    Hi Mr. Jones! I did not use a CD or anything else to boot. I guess I forgot to mention that later in the day I was able to start in Safe Mode. I then chose "Start Windows Normally ". On the next screen I saw that "Microsoft Windows Recovery Console" was on top of the "Select Operating System ". That was when I decided to look at the Boot.ini. There was the problem.

    boot.ini changes to default=C:\CMDCONS\BOOTSECT.DAT, if Recovery Console was set to be the default boot option.

    "default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS" has been set as shown as long I have had the computer, except for yesterday. I do not know why.
