Recently, on booting, I receive an error message that my identity can not be recognized:

"Windows cannot load the user's profile but has logged you on with the default profile for the system.

DETAIL - An I/O operation initiated by the registry failed unrecoverably. The registry could not read in, or write out, or flush, one of the files that contain the system's image of the registry. "

Booting occurs. Have not tried to load a program to see if admin rights are denied.

Am I headed for another hardware failure which could be averted? Is there a setting to which I need to attend?

    Thank you.

Let me qualify this post a bit. A crash ocurred just after I posted this. Files and programs were disappearing, along with privileges. On each boot, my profile was saved as a *.bak file and a new one created.

I restored system drive with a stored image and returned to function losing only a few days emails.

Just before crash, I downloaded and installed the most recent bunch of MS features. I suspect some of them or some glich in my system. It appears that the autodownload notification seems to require the same programs many times, though some are dated more recently than those with same title DL's before.

Of course, I had some emails which may have acted badly, but none which tripped eTrust's warnings.

I was able to restore NTUSER.DAT from a stored image, but still get the same boot error message as above.

I CAN sign on as my own identity. now. Before crash, ID acted as described above. No files or programs now disappearing.

What just happened? How do I get rid of the boot EM and flush the registry or correct it to recognize my NTUSER.DAT or change it?

    Hi,

Any error messages in the Application log?

To open Event Viewer, go to Start > Run and type eventvwr.msc, click OK.

Check your Application log for errors.

You can double click on any error for more details, and there is also a button to copy the error to your clipboard for easy copying & pasting.

    Yes, Arie,

Plenty of errors. These are spread out over the days during which I had problems, Hopefully, they will provide a thread to solve what is wrong. I trust that it is not too little or too much info. Copies of errros back to May are below.
