    boot configuration error

have an old micron p200 that i am trying to get functioning as a test machine. having a small problem at boot. is an old phoenix bios.

as its booting and going through its seeing whats there it comes up with a message that says "Invalid System Configuration Data - run configuration utility ". it continues to boot then stops right after the mouse is initialized and says "warning: irq not configured - pci display controller at slot 02 bus:00, device10, function 00

    f1 resume f2 setup

have gone into the cmos and all looks okay. the errors do not stop the machine from going into windows and all seems to work just fine just not sure what this message is trying to tell me.

    any ideas would be appreciated.

    config error

Copied over from a german site.
    of 02.12.1999

When starting of Windows 95 the error message "Invalid system Configuration DATA appears always - run configuration utility ". Then it beeps twice and "presses (F1) ton resume, (F2) ton setup" appears. If I press "F1 ", it continues, and Windows starts normally. But cannot there nevertheless something tune - only which?

For once is not here the operating system of the Suender. The error message means exactly what says it! The fundamental computer configuration, e.g. how much RAM or which type of non removable disk is present, put down in a small battery-supported storage area. Sometimes it can occur that this so-called CMOS range by an incorrect program or a weak battery comes to damage. If the error is not serious, the computer can start, but nevertheless a warning is spent. Press like suggested "F2 ", so that you arrive in the BIOS Setup program. Usually it is not even necessary that you must make any changes. It is sufficient when leaving the Setups to store the CMOS data again and the error message disappeared (talk)

at one time this was a win95 machine. i then installed win98 and now i have win2k with 64mb of ram. remember this is just a play machine to see what it can still do. actually win2k works pretty good on it. there was a time when this error was not occuring.

but have gone into setup multiple times. the first time just as you said that sometimes it just needs to go into the table and exist out. didnt work so went in verified settings and even one time reset back to factory. still the error.

have not tired blowing the table away by the jumper guess i might try that.

any other suggestions please let me know.

thanks rancher your thoughts are appreciated.

    bois

I think it's in your bios:(
This info below has most of the cause/solutions.

Invalid Configuration Error, No Apparent Problems in Setup
Invalid Configuration - Please Run Setup. What Does This Mean?
At bootup time, the Phoenix BIOS will test peripheral components, and verify that the configuration parameters in Setup match what the BIOS finds. If it is determined that the configuration data does not match, the Invalid Configuration message will be displayed.

If a device fails, (for example, you see a Floppy Drive Seek Error), the Invalid Configuration message will also be displayed. In this case, the configuration data in Setup is actually correct -- the device is failing.

    Pinpointing The Cause
The most common Invalid Configuration error that people miss is the (Video) Display setting. Be sure that this accurately reflects your video display adapter type. When in doubt, try the different settings. Setting this incorrectly will generate the Invalid Configuration error, but will not disable the display.

If the memory size or hard drive configuration is the problem, you will see a specific message to this effect. So if you are not seeing a specific message regarding the memory size or hard drive configuration, you can rule these out as the source of your problem. If you are seeing a memory size configuration error message, click here for additional suggestions. If you are seeing a hard drive error message, contact a qualified service technican for assistance.

If you have two floppy drives, try alternatively setting up each drive as the A drive both in Setup, and by disconnecting the second drive and connecting just one drive at a time to the A: drive cable connector. If the error goes away when one of the drives is disconnected, the drive is suspect.

    Drop Back and Punt
This document outlines the more common troubleshooting steps you can take to locate the cause of and correct an Invalid Configuration message. Any one of a number of error conditions during the boot up process can flag the Invalid Configuration status. If you can't locate the cause through these steps, or other reasonable trial-and-error measures at the level of your knowledge and facilities (i.e. spare video adapters or disk drives on hand), then it's time to visit your local professional PC service technican.

You and I seem to think a like. You explanation is just what I thought to. Tried changing the video settings in the bios before your suggestion and that did not effect the message. Even tried putting the video card in different slots but the error just reported the problem in the new slot. So either I have bad pci slots which doesnt make sense that all of them are bad unless the board is bad in that area or I have a some what bad graphics card. Currently its an old diamond stealth 2mb card.

Again what do you think of my thoughts there. I'll wait to hear from you before I try a different card.

    Again thanks.
