    Hi All
    I have a Boot-anomaly. Whenever I boot up, for just a second, I think I see a boot menu. It has 3 option (I think), one being "Microsoft windows home editionâ€. That is the one highlighted. After this flashes across the screen, it boots normally. This started after my last bout with some BSOD’s that are resolved now. (thanks Broni)

    Since I think this is a boot menu, I looked at my boot.ini file and here is what is in it:

    [boot loader]
    timeout=3
    default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)windows
    [operating systems]
    C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat=â€Microsoft Recovery Console" /cmdcons
    unsupportedDebug=â€do not select this" /debug
    multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)WINDOWS=â€Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /noexecute=optin /fastdetect.

    Since I am not familiar with boot.ini, and I don’t want to mess it up, can someone look at this and let me know if I am on the rite track?

    This does not impede the function of my pc, but it was not there before and if it is not needed, I would like it gone.

    Thanks

    Sven

    Hi SVEN.

    The first line, C:\cmdcons\bootsect.dat=”Microsoft Recovery Console” /cmdcons allows you to boot into the Recovery Console. If you already have a Windows XP CD handy then you don't need this option and you can delete it.

    The second line, unsupportedDebug=”do not select this” /debug you can delete since its not part of what a default boot.ini file looks like.

    Don't delete any other lines except those 2 that I outlined.

    The timeout time for the boot menu is also 3 seconds. If you want to make it 0 seconds where the system just boots straight into Windows XP Home Edition without the boot menu then let me know.

    Thanks Evan,

    I think I will just set it to Zero seconds, that way I don't see it and I don't have to mess with it.

    On the lower right side is a field called timeout. Is that the place to change the setting?

    Thanks

    I tried to set it to Zero, but it will not let me. 3 seconds minimum.

    In order to set the timeout to zero seconds try this.

    Click Start< Right Click My Computer and click Properties. In the System Properties window click the Advanced tab< Under where it says Startup and Recovery hit the Settings button. In the Startup and Recovery Options window under System Startup uncheck both Time to display list of Operating Systems and Time to display recovery options when needed checkboxes. Click Ok when done.

    Reboot the computer for the changes to take effect.
