    Hi Folks,

Trouble with my Thinkpad HD brought me here ... more of that elsewhere.

By way of introduction, I've recently been made redundant. After 22 years in THAT line of work I decided for a new start in a new career and to retrain in an entirely different area ... bioinformatics. So I'm currently on a rapid self-taught program for biology, molecular biology, Perl, Java, MySQL, Python ... might even try C++ if I feel strong ... enjoying it. But boy do I need a bigger hard drive!

I've never been inside a compute before despite years of being a 'user', so hope to learn lots here.

    Cheers

    B

Hi Bobox - your posting suggests that you only have one HD. In which case you don't need to change your present drive, just add a second unit (a slave). If you are competent with a screwdriver it's no problem. You should find, on the cable that goes from the drive to the motherboard, another connector. All you have to do is set the drive jumper on your second unit to 'slave' - there should be info on the disk label for this - and plug in the 'other' connector. There should also be a spare 4-pin power cable available from the power supply which must be plugged in to your new drive.

    Hope this is useful.

    Welcome bobox,

There's generally a pleasant mix of people on this board so I'm sure you'll enjoy being partof the community :D

I'm sure your hardware questions will be answered competently but as far as a bigger HD is concerned, don't worry about going inside your computer external devices are easily available and even more easily installed :)
