If it's a fresh install, try reinstalling XP Pro again (without being connected to the internet).

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

We need a few more details here ....

Why did you put XP Pro on the computer?

How did you do it ? - by booting from the CD, formatting and making a fresh install?

Is the copy of XP Pro original, i.e. not a copy and has it been installed on another computer previously. If previously installed on another computer the installation you made is illegal and will not activate.

Let us know the answeres here and we may be able to help out.

    Fair enough, but...

Is this the first time you used this CD or has it been installed before?

If you have already used it then it is only valid for the original system, however if this is the first time then I'll refer you to my original post, do a clean install without being connected to the internet. If succesfull you can always activate later. If it fails you may need to confirm your product key with Microsoft, I believe a local telephone number is available.

Is it the same message? Have you checked the BIOS to make sure you're booting from CD/DVD drive?

It's not wise to put in a hard drive with potential irreplaceble data just to check another system. I do hope your mum's drive is ok.

Chris, no offence but maybe a more experienced aquaintance would be better dealing with this?

In which case it would appear you have a faulty CD or drive/motherboard

Booting from an XP cd will not result in a "boot failure" otherwise.

Maybe (a new CD/DVD is also possible) but it's impossible to say, my best advice is for you to allow a local IT expert to look at your system.

Before you do though, make sure that new XP disc is clean and scratch free and run a lens cleaner through your CD/DVD drive.

Although (as far as I can tell) you've had issues with 2 hard drives and at least one optical drive prepare yourself for the worst and anything else will be a pleasant surprise.

Sorry Chris but I can't help any further here.

Sorry Chris I can't advise, I shop locally so replacements/support are easily available.

I would seem that you may be in the UK in which case I recommend www.dabs.com - my source of all computer components.
