hey guys n' gals, let me start by saying i'm new to these forums but from what i've seen here they seem to be very helpful and informative.

secondly let me opologise if there has been a thread in this nature before, if there is i havent seen it.

Ok i'll get to my problem now.. It's nothing huge in seriousness to my knowledge.. But recently whilst running several programs at once ive had the BsoD and had to restart. The message each time has stated that it may be to do with memory shortages at the time of the crash...

The first time it happened i was running Football manager 2006 ( a very heavy memory user), WinAmp and Firefox along with msn and X-fire..yea quite a few programs at once for my pc i suspect...

this is what the event log/viewer said the first time:

    Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bfc912c9, parameter3 8b8a1800, parameter4 00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

Then today whilst running more or less the same programs again but footballmanager 07 instead of 06 the same happened:

heres the error message this time:

    Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 bfc912c9, parameter3 ac3021ec, parameter4 00000000.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

These are the only 2 crashed ive ever had in teh 3 years or so I've had this pc..

    heres my pc specs.

    Amd 2800+ processor
    1Gb ram
    120gb Hard drive
    256mb geforce 7600gs

Think thats all the info i have to hand...

I'd greatly apreciate input and need my mind set at rest//hopefully these incidents are nothing too serious and simply caused by me using too many apps at once and nothing more sinister..as i love this little machine and she's running fine on everything i use and other than now and the prior time has never crashed...

    /tony

Hello Tony and welcome to the Board,

You can do some diagnostics and see if any problems turn up.

    Test your RAM: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Check your HD: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/chkdsk.mspx use the the /r switch

Check your Virtual Memory (pagefile.sys) size:
Right click My Computer > Advanced tab > Settings under Performance > Advanced tab > Virtual Memory.

How much physical RAM do you have installed? VM default size is 1.5 X RAM.

If you come up negative on the diags - you might try enlarging the VM size - the trade off will be more disk access. You can also add more RAM.

    Regards - Charles

See also 1000008e here, scroll down the page .....

If none of Charles' suggestions bear fruit set your computer up to give a dump, debug it as described here and post the log.

May not help, but it certainly won't hurt, find updates for the chipset/motherboard drivers, then update the graphics drivers.

Everest in my signature may help you identifying the hardware if you need it.

Hey guys thanks for the replies...i cant seem to find anything causing the problem atall....the worrying thing is, today when i booted up the first time i got a auto restart with a blue screen i didnt have time to read. this happened around mid-way into the bootup and nothing was logged in the event viewer..the only thing i could see in the event viewer for today was something to do with the cd rom drive at bootup but thats fine.

I'm fresh out of ideas and starting to get concerned as its never happened at bootup before and i have no idea what to do next or how to go about isolating the issue if theres even one there.

    /tony

    Hello Tony,

    To read the BSOD error:

Right click My Computer > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery > Settings > System Failure > uncheck Automatically restart.

    Regards - Charles

yea ive done that , so when it happens in windows its fine i can read it easy enough, but that didnt seem to work when the blue screen happened during the system bootup...I mean i've had only 2 pc crashes in 2 years resulting in blue screen both of those have been in the past 3months, and then today i had the blue screen restart during bootup.

Ive ran a full scan disk thats came back fine..I'm now running a full defrag ( the fist i think i've ever done on this pc) other than this i have no idea what caused the 3 blue screens i've had other than what i posted above.

measures i have taken so far:

    1.Full scan disc upon reboot.
    2. Updated Gfx card drivers.
    3. Currently running defrag...lord knows how long that's gonna take -.-

Other than these precautions i'm at a loss. A friend of mine says he wouldnt be too concerned unless it starts happening at every bootup or frequently when in windows...as the 2 blue screens i've suffered in windows happened when i was putting a massive amount of strain on my cpu, its the one this morning at bootup that has me slightly concerned.

    /tony

Also, i have just setup a dump file as suggested in this thread...I guess this file only updates itself after a blue screen or error?..In that case i hope it never has to update, but it could help narrow down the issue i'm having:)

    Hi Tony,

One elimimation you can try: change the boot sequence in the BIOS - bypass the ROM device and boot directly from the HD.

Thats the full log from the 14th, sorry if i pasted in some irrelivant parts of the file but i have no idea what any of it means so best to post too much than not enough ;)...The only thing that i did notice was the driver bug --- Winamp at the top of this page, Funnily enough ive been running winamp at both times when ive had blue screen crashes, if this is causing it i'll just uninstall it but that doesnt explain my blue screen at bootup today, or does it?

    /Tony

I think the answer is very simple. Either too much is running at once or incompatabilities between what is running. Again, as I have said many times before trying to run too many things at start up may not save time. I would suggest chance in that are to start with.

thanks for the swift reply, but as stated im more of a program user and more skilled there, i have no idea how to set or change what starts at start up, or what i can safely disable from the list of programs loaded at start up =).

and when u state a conflict i think maybe its football manager that doesnt like winamp as they are the two i was running each time along with msn when i crashed.

These logs require specialised knowledge to interpret fully - that rules me out :), but from what I read there you have a problem with Winamp ....
and your nVidia video drivers ....
As Matt suggested try uninstalling/updating/reinstalling your video drivers.

BTW - if you have cause to post further dump logs please post the entire log and spread over 2+ posts if necessary. The header to the log tells us about your OS and that may be relevant.

Yea thanks again for the input, I've updated my drivers already, did that first thing this morning, seems ok now, Pc is booting up 2 or 3 x faster nowalso, maybe that's more to do with the fact i eventually did a full scandisk and defrag the first ones ive done admitedly since i had this pc built almost 2.5 years ago. I probably should have defraged it a good few times in that time with the amountof downloading , installing/uninstalling and stuff ive done in that time.

Also i've set a dump file up incase she ( yes my pc is a she ;)) ever crashes again, hopefully she wont tho :D

Time will tell, but fingers crossed :)

Although Win XP on NTFS can tolerate much more disk defragmentation than FAT32 it still needs defragging frequently. I use Diskeeper Pro - from the same stable that wrote the XP defragger - set on automatic and most of my disks (17 in all) get defragged at least every other day if required.
