Reinstalling Windows XP with SP2 on a Dell Dimension 8400. After formatting using NTFS and all files being copied from Windows XP CD, computer rebooted to install Windows and I got the blue screen of death. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I feel its the hard drive.

(I tried reinstalling XP because many problems with sound, network, modem, antivirus, adware programs being shut down or components removed - virus??)

Have you formatted the Hard drive surface? If it's a virus that's what I'd do.
Alternatively... have you tried the 'hammer' format or the 'out of the top floor window' format, because if your hard drive has been irreperably damaged then it is doubtful things are going to go very smooth. It could in fact have caused the initial problems that made you reinstall windows in the first place. In that case it would be time to buy a new hard drive.

Thanks for the reply. Yea, that was my exact thinking about the virus and I did reformat the computer and thats what lead to the blue screen. Do you think the virus could definitely corrupt the hard drive this bad?

I have already told my friend to contact DELL to get a new hard drive but she is afraid she is in for a fight with DELL to get one out of them. But its only 1 year old and she has a 3 year warranty on it so DELL shouldnt throw much of a fit I hope. Thanks again!

It could be a virus, but it could just be windows. Bad things can happen to hard drives when windows crashes/reboots. If windows got so buggy that it had to be reset every five minutes then that might have caused the problem.

Does the hard drive need backing up? If so try and find a way before you send it back to dell because they'll chuck it straight in the bin. If there is another computer you can plug the hard drive into you might want to try that. It will let you check the hard drive itself to see if you can access it and copy information. If you can't even access it (After due installation) then it's had it. If you can, then backup away. The virus, if there is one most probably won't be in any file you actually want...

to find a backup tool try google: "open source" OR sourceforge backup utility OR tool

Bear in mind that Dell will try and squirm out of replacing it. Don't whip the hard drive out if it voids the warranty, just send it back and thank your lucky stars you've got warranty.

Hello, I already saved the info I needed because I knew I was going to reformat. The computer itself was still very fast except for trying to open "Network Connections." It wouldnt connect to dial up internet or my high speed cable internet. (would not get ip addy from my router). Also, many McAfee errors came up on start up.

I installed AdAware SE and copied the latest updates I had saved into the folder and also installed AVG AntiVirus. AdAware only detected tracking cookies. I also installed SpyBot. SpyBot and AVG all of a sudden acted weird and displayed error messages basically saying some components were changed/removed by another program. I also ran stinger but couldnt locate anything but I still suspect a virus.

The hard drive is a Seagate Barracuda. Personally, I prefer WD or Maxtor. Thanks for the reply.

    Hi Collee,

Don't throw your HD away yet It is quite a young HD and no virus will physically damage it! The first stop error message, Stop 0x000000D1, signals a driver problem. Wait for an expert's advice if necessary, but the best proof would be to try the HD in another computer and running the Seagate test program on it. Is it a full, and legal Windows XP disc or one that somebody has slipstreamed to SP2?

    I agree totally

    Yes I agree,
Dont chuck the drive away just cause you have got install problems with XP, geez that happens all the time

the first thing to do is to delete all existing partitions and let the install CD create a new partition and format it .....dont just format the drive that can still leave leave you with problems start clean instead.

IF and I say IF there was a boot sector virus on your drive or somethig else that Fdisk and formating your drive doesnt wipe then you can clear it back to "factory" by using debug on a boot disk. I have used this numberous times to completely clear a HD and it has never failed me yet..

NB: WARNING IT WILL TOTALLY OBLITERATE ANYTHING ON YOUR HARD DRIVE!!

Hello, it is a full, legal copy on a Dell disc. (Dell Dimension 8400 pc) I pulled out the RAM, video, modem, and disconnected the CD/DVD ROM IDE cables/power cables and still got the same result. I will look for a Seagate test program and try that. Thanks!

Hello, I have a problem much like this one, I get the same error but only when I press D when deleting the partition when re-installing Windows XP Home. Or if I press any key while looking at the remove partition area. Any ideas on what this could be? Any help would be great!

After about two days of doing the standard hard drive diagnostics with Dell Phone Support & Dell Chat Support, I let my knowledge and anger take over and I demanded to talk to a Supervisor. After they learned of all the red tape I encountered and how I was a Computer Support Specialist with an Associates Degree, they apologized over and over and assured me they would ship me out a new hard drive and SATA cable overnight.

The Supervisor pretty much told me I knew exactly what I was talking about and how they personally new of hard drives passing diagnostics and still being bad. You wouldnt believe the constant apologizing (and sucking up!) the Supervisor did.

I knew from my experience and believed so much it was hard drive failure. If you believe in something so much and have experience to back it up, don't let ANY "Customer Service Representative" who is reading from a sheet of paper tell you otherwise!

The owner of this computer I was fixing had a THREE YEAR extended warranty on it and still had all this trouble. They assured me they would never ever purchase a DELL computer again. I would never wish a DELL computer on my worst enemy!

Yet another reason why I build all my computers (saves money and no red tape when parts fail)!
