Upon booting I regularly, not always, get the blue death screen with the following:

    INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM

    STOP: 0x00000096 (0xB65F4D5C, 0X8056167C, 0X80561640, 0XF7789AA6)

    tfsnifs.sys - address B65F4D5C base at B65E30000 Datestamp 3f313057
    ssrt1n.sys - Add F7789AA6 base at F77870000 Datestamp 3f12f645

    Beginning dump of physical memory
    physical dump complete
Contact system administrator or tech for further assisstance

    Any ideas?

Here is a gobblygook explanation of INVALID_WORK_QUEUE_ITEM and here is another in plainer speak. Seems to be related to w2k rather than XP, although the cause may be the same.

tfsnifs.sys is related to Drive Letter Access by Sonic, IBM or Veritas so if you have one of those installed check it out.

ssrt1n.sys brings up no hits on Google which is somewhat worrying.

Feel free to post a dump log after referencing here ....

but I suspect it will give the same information.

Maybe it was ssrtln.sys rather than ssrt1n.sys. The former gets lots of Google action... ssrtln.sys also seems to have a 'sonic' component. Maybe I should just uninstall Sonic?

Yes -I've been caught out on l & 1 before now - should have looked more closely when there were no hits on Google :)

Yes, you should uninstall Sonic and see how it goes. Maybe check for updates before reinstalling if that proves to be the source of the problem.
