[Inactive] Bloodhound.Exploit.81, Bad_Boy.1049, Adware.180Solutions,

I have my good friend's computer & external hard drive which I am trying to "tune" and back up for him.

He keeps all his data (mainly photographs) on an external hard drive, which showed some file corruption at the end of last year. I suspected a virus then, but he claimed to have solved the problem himself and carried on with it.

When I came to help him back up the external hard drive this week, I found in Norton's history file that Norton had found and removed Bloodhound.Exploit.81 from a Publisher file on the external hard drive in September last year. This made me look further and I found that Bad_Boy.1049 had been removed from the C drive in Symantec Shared Files in March last year.

The following processes are regularly accessing the internet:
system 32 : WgaTray.exe, csrss.exe, alg.exe, svchost.exe, ipconfig.exe, drwtsn32.exe, dwwin.exe. Also "System" for which I cannot find a breadcrumb trail. Also in Program Files, GoogleUpdate.exe.

Norton's history also shows numerous and repeated Rule "Default Block UPnP Discovery" stealthed (192.168.1.254, Port ssdp (1900)) I'm not sure if this is of any significance or not.

From my own experience, I know Norton's removal is not always the whole story, so I have done a scan with Malwarebytes. This found Adware.180solutions and Malware.Trace. I have also run Combofix, although I'm not sure if I had completely disabled Norton when I did this.

I have enclosed the required logs below and would appreciate your help.
Many thanks.
Sarah

Hi. First thing I will say is that it is a no-no to run Combofix without receiving direction from someone with knowledge of it's use.
Combofix has been known to turn a nice pc into a (temporary) paperweight. It makes changes to the system too which are reversed once Combofix has been correctly uninstalled.

==

MBA-M is about 100 definitions out-of-date. I suggest you update it and run another full scan.

==

Other than that, I see nothing suspicious in your logs. Let me know if MBA-M finds anything.

==

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.
• Once the files are downloaded click on Next
• Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows:
• Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
• Extended
• Scan Options:
• Scan Archives
• Scan Mail Bases
• Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.
Kas-SaveReport-1.gif
Kas-Savetxt.gif
To obtain the report:
Click on: Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Thank you for your reply Crunchie.

OK, so I'm suitably reprimanded for using Combofix without instruction
I was only trying to save you guys the time and trouble telling me to do it!

How do I uninstall it correctly???

I have updated MBA-M and run it again. It found nothing further.

I have now been trying for several hours to run the Kaspersky online scanner in IE. It stalls and freezes at the downloading updates stage each time!:(

What do you suggest?

Sarah

Try this instead;

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and post the ScanLog with your post for assistance.
• You will need to use Internet Explorer to complete this scan.
• You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.
• Be sure the option to Remove found threats is Un-checked at this time (we may have it clean what it finds at a later time), and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
• When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

NOTE: If you are unable to complete the ESET scan, please try another from the list below:

---

Combofix uninstall instructions;

• Click START then RUN
• Now type Click Start > Run and copy/paste the following bolded text into the Run box and click OK:

ComboFix /Uninstall in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the /, it needs to be there.

I'm having trouble uninstalling Combofix. The command you have given me just makes it run again, rather than removing it.

I'll have a go with Eset once I've managed to uninstall CF.

Please download OTC by OldTimer:
Save it to your Desktop.
Double click OTC.exe.
Click the CleanUp! button.
If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes. The tool will delete itself once it finishes.

Please do the Kaspersky scan when done.

OK. I've run OTC.

I've also run Kaspersky online scanner (it took nearly 4 hours!!!), although I didn't get the options you described, I think it's probably done what you intended. The log is below.

(To be online for so long with the Norton antivirus off - is this OK????)

Not confident it is ok to be online with Norton enabled :p.

Should be fine as long as it was just the scan happening.

Kaspersky lo is clean. Any issues you are having?

Thanks Crunchie.

The PC is still painfully slow and rather unstable (keeps freezing).

Could it be the old spec of PC (motherboard Asus A7N266-VM, AMD Athlon XP socket A 462 and 768MB DDR RAM)??? Is it worth trying to improve?

BTW if you don't think much of Norton, what would you recommend?

I would go with either Avast or Avira, or Comodo if you want a firewall too. You may see a response improvement too, as Norton is notoriously hoggish.

Try a defragmentation too.

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.

Double-click ATF Cleaner.exe to open it.

Under Main choose:
Windows Temp
Current User Temp
All Users Temp
Cookies
Temporary Internet Files
Prefetch
Java Cache

*The other boxes are optional*
Then click the Empty Selected button.

Firefox:
Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Opera:
Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click NO at the prompt.

Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program

Thanks Crunchie.

I have run ATF Cleaner and defrag.

If I post a new HJT log, would you tell me what I could delete (unnecessary startups that might be slowing the sytem up), please?

Many thanks.

Certainly, although I prefer to either do it from within the program, or through msconfig.

Crunchie,
HELP! I think I've had a disaster.

Before posting the HJT log to you, I thought I'd add some software to the PC to increase the security.

I downloaded Web of Trust, Spywareblaster and SuperantiSpyware. I downloaded the updates for SAS and ran it. It found 37 Adware Tracking Cookies! I clicked to remove them and reboot and now the PC won't reboot properly. It gets to the Windows intial window (Windows is loading) and then powers down and starts up again and keeps cycling like this. I've started it in safe mode but have no idea what to do now?

Please help me!

Many thanks.

If you can start in safe mode, go to system restore and restore back to before you did what you did.
Removing cookies would not have caused that, I wouldn't think.

I have done a system restore. It still won't start properly. I'm thoroughly stumped.

When you start up, are you able to access a menu where you can load the last known good configuration?
F5 or F8 key on the motherboard should get you there.
