The OE e-mail rules setting shown in the image below doesn't work.
In section three there is an apparent contradiction between the first and third rule. Nothing is underlined so I can't edit the rules.

I have tested this by sending e-mails with attachments to myself and they were received. I want to block receiving all e-mails with attachments to avoid lengthly downloads of spam caused by other people infected with Sobig.F virus. Please, tell me what to do.

The "Where the message has an attachment" isn't an editable rule. Either a message has an attachment or it doesn't.

"Do not download from the server" isn't editable either since that's also an either/or situation.

The shortcoming with OE's mail rules is that they are apparently applied after the message arrives in your inbox...which makes it a little late not to download it from the server. I've never been real clear on why the "do not download" is included as an option.

As far as getting messages with the Sobig virus attached - as long as you don't open the attachment, you won't get the virus. Just delete them as they come in and hope that whoever has the infected machine with your emaill address in their address book figures it out and cleans up their machine.

The virus is going to deactivate itself on Sept 10, so there is some relieft in sight. ;)

How about Tools>Options>Security Tab and put a check in the box next to "Do not allow attachments...... "? You will still get the email but without the attachment.

Not too sure that Bmoore is right here - my understanding is if that box is checked the email plus attachment will be downloaded from the server to the inbox.dbx folder, but you will not be able to open it or save it to another place on the HD without first unchecking that box.

This in itself won't prevent the lengthy download to which aruzinsky refers.

No, you still get the email with the attachment. It says, "Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could potentially be a virus. "

I am not worried about getting the virus. The problem is that downloading 40 emails with 70 KB attachments each on a dial up modem takes a long time and ties up my computer resources. I also want to be prepared for Sobig.G-Z spam.

So, what can be done outside outlook express?

    Have a look at
    http://www.mailwasher.net/
A quick read suggests you can delete emails without downloading them - halfway there??

You're right Pete, I use Mailwasher and only see the headers and delete them before I get anything.

Although I get about 15 spams a day, I haven't seen anything having to do with sobig. Luck I guess.....

Mail Washer sounds good to me. I'll give it a try. If you don't hear from me again in this thread, it worked. Thank you.

both agnitum outpost pro2 (software firewall) and Disruptor OL (antispam outlook plugin) have the ability to strip out email attachments:

    http://agnitum.com
    http://disruptor.de

either strip out (or delete) all attachments or selectively by file extension

    hope this helps
