[Inactive] Blaster symptoms + much more?!

My wife's office computer seems to have the Blaster worm, based on the primary symptoms of being incredibly slow to boot, then getting the message "Windows must now restart because the RPC service terminated.. ", then 1 minute countdown and restart. (I can keep it from restarting using the shutdown -a @ the cmd line, every minute:mad:, but at least I can keep working on it) Plus, it worked fine, perfect on Friday the 16th early in the day and every day for the previous year, and then this all started on Saturday - the Blaster does gets activated on the 16th is my understanding.

BUT, her machine is 100% patched, gets updates installed automatically and has current Kaspersky installed. It is on a network, but only with a printer and fax. Didn't MS fix this vulnerability in SP2 like 7 years ago?

Stranger still is that the symptoms go way beyond Blaster:
None of the USB ports work-
Task bar is just a thin line at the bottom, can't be accessed-
Hover mouse over task bar and it's an hourglass-
    Can't Alt+Tab to anything-
Windows key or CTRL+ESC won't bring up anything, so can't access programs-
Can't run Internet Explorer, or most other programs from cmd line in task manager-
I can get Explorer to work, but you can't copy or paste anything. So I can't copy any files from floppy or CD to hard drive, can't copy any files on C: to anywhere else on C:-
Can't search for files or folders-
    more-

None of the Blaster reg entries exist, none of the .exe's are running:
    msblast
    pe^^s
    teekids
    mspatch
    mslaugh
    enbiei

I found a blaster discovery and removal script called msblast.vbs on another support site and when I run it on my machine it exits instantly and says the worm is not present. When I run it on hers it just turns to an hourglass for a second or two and then nothing, which leads me to believe it is being blocked.

Thought about running Hijack on it, but no way to copy the log file to any removable media, or access the internet to post.

Any thoughts on how to proceed??

Let's see, it you have same problem, if we do this...

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

You will need USB flash drive to move information from bad computer to a working computer.

You need to download two programs.

    First

ISO Burner this will allow you to burn REATOGO-X-PE ISO to a cd and make it bootable. Just install the programm, from there on it's fairly automatic (Instructions)

    Second

    • Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 270.3 MB in size so it may take some time to download.
    • When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD
    • Reboot your system (Non working computer) using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note. If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
    • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
    • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
    • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users is checked and press OK
    • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
      • Change Drivers to All
      • Change Registry to All
      • Under Custom Scan box paste this in:

        netsvcs
        %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
        /md5start
        eventlog.dll
        scecli.dll
        netlogon.dll
        cngaudit.dll
        sceclt.dll
        ntelogon.dll
        logevent.dll
        iaStor.sys
        nvstor.sys
        atapi.sys
        IdeChnDr.sys
        viasraid.sys
        AGP440.sys
        vaxscsi.sys
        nvatabus.sys
        viamraid.sys
        nvata.sys
        nvgts.sys
        iastorv.sys
        ViPrt.sys
        eNetHook.dll
        ahcix86.sys
        KR10N.sys
        nvstor32.sys
        ahcix86s.sys
        nvrd32.sys
        symmpi.sys
        adp3132.sys
        mv61xx.sys
        userinit.exe
        explorer.exe
        /md5stop
        %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
        %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
    • Copy this file to your USB drive.
    • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.

Do this on the computer you are posting from:
Copy the text in the codebox below:

    Code:
    :OTL
    O4 - HKLM..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] File not found
    O4 - Startup: C:\Documents and Settings\Sante1\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\Shortcut to TIME.EXE.lnk = C:\Program Files\TIME\TIME.EXE (BC Productions)
O16 - DPF: DirectAnimation Java Classes file://C:\WINDOWS\Java\classes\dajava.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)
O16 - DPF: Microsoft XML Parser for Java file://C:\WINDOWS\Java\classes\xmldso.cab (Reg Error: Key error.)
    O18 - Protocol\Handler\ipp - No CLSID value found
    O18 - Protocol\Handler\msdaipp - No CLSID value found

    :Services

    :Reg

    :Files

    :Commands
    [purity]
    [emptytemp]

    Open Notepad and paste it.
Save the document as Fix.txt on to a USB flash drive

On the infected computer the following...

    Run OTLPE

    • Insert USB stick and find the file Fix.txt. Drag the file Fix.txt and drop it under the Custom Scans/Fixes box at the bottom.
      • (The content of Fix.txt should appear in the box)
    • Then click the Run Fix button at the top
    • Let the program run unhindered, reboot the PC when it is done
    • Post the log produced (you'll need to transfer it with USB stick)
    • Attempt to reboot normally into windows.

OK, ran as per instructed but unfortunately that did not fix the issue. Haven't even logged in yet and I can tell it is a no-go because a) it is taking forever to get to a login prompt b) it is starting on the wrong monitor (dual video cards, dual monitors - starting on the wrong monitor is one of the symptoms) and c) the USB mouse is not working.

    Here is the log file:

See, if you can start in Safe Mode.

No, because, when using OTLPE, no files on your computer are active.

If you mean boot to safe mode straight from the hard drive, yes I can do that but it exhibits exactly the same symptoms. Maybe 20 min to get to a login, another 15 - 20 to the Windows desktop, no USB ports and then 1 minute to shutdown due to RPC service...

Since many things are not working, how did you manage to get msblast.vbs script on that computer?

The computer was functioning perfectly all day (up through about 1PM, when her secretary leaves for the day) Friday the 16th, then started it up on Saturday and it has all these symptoms. When booting from OTLPE CD, USB ports work fine, boots to the correct monitor, copy and paste functions work properly and boots at a fairly normal speed, given everything is coming from the CD, etc.

Ahhh - I didn't read your post carefully enough, that' why I didn't answer your question. As I recall, I was able to get a USB port working long enough to run the script by booting into safe mode from a windows CD. Also found an old PS2 mouse laying around so I can at least navigate around on the thing.

See, if you can manage any steps listed below (download tools on good computer)...

Please download and run the below tool named Rkill (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com) which may help allow other programs to run.

There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.

Vista and Win7 users need to right click Rkill and choose Run as Administrator

You only need to get one of these to run, not all of them. You may get warnings from your antivirus about this tool, ignore them or shutdown your antivirus.

    * Rkill.com
    * Rkill.scr
    * Rkill.pif
    * Rkill.exe

    • * Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
      * If using Vista or Windows 7 right-click on it and choose Run As Administrator.
      * A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
      * If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
      * If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
      * Do not reboot until instructed.
      * If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.

Once you've gotten one of them to run then try to immediately run the following.

    Now download and run exeHelper.

    • * Please download exeHelper from Raktor to your desktop.
      * Double-click on exeHelper.com to run the fix.
      * A black window should pop up, press any key to close once the fix is completed.
      * A log file named log.txt will be created in the directory where you ran exeHelper.com
      * Attach the log.txt file to your next message.

Note: If the window shows a message that says "Error deleting file ", please re-run the program before posting a log - and post the two logs together (they will both be in the one file).

    ===============================================================

Please download ComboFix from [color= "Red"]Here[/color] or [color= "#FF0000"]Here[/color] to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
    1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
    2. Close any open browsers.
    3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
      • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results ".
      • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
NOTE1. If Combofix asks you to install Recovery Console, please allow it.
NOTE 2. If Combofix asks you to update the program, always do so.
      • Close any open browsers.
      • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
      • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
      • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
    5. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
    6. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt"
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Make sure, you re-enable your security programs, when you're done with Combofix.

DO NOT make any other changes to your computer (like installing programs, using other cleaning tools, etc.), until it's officially declared clean!!!

OK, I have everything downloaded and ready to go but you didn't specify how to start the computer to run these tools - Normal? Safe Mode? Safe Mode from CD? OTLPE CD? Normal and safe mode will be very tough because it won't stay running long enough to run it. You also specify that ComboFix must be saved to the desktop, but that will be impossible since I can't copy anything to (or from) the infected PC.

Don't worry about putting Combofix on a desktop. It's a minor issue at the moment.
Try to start the computer in Safe Mode and I'm hoping, rKill may give you some more time.

I am just not getting anywhere with this.

Cannot get explorer to run in safe mode, so can't do anything there. I can get an explorer window to come up under a normal boot and I try to run rkill.com, but it keeps getting interrupted by the RPC shutdown. The logfile it generates has nothing in it under processes terminated. Once this first cycle occurs, then cannot get an explorer window back without re-booting - then wait another 30 minutes and try again. rkill.scr does nothing, couldn't download rkill.pif (bad link) and rkill.exe seems to run and do something but generates no log file because of the RPC shutdown - the thing pretty much just locks up at that point. Tried running exeHelper just for kicks after the rkill.exe, but it just gives a flashing hyphen with absolutely no disk activity and 0% CPU usage. And I do mean ZERO % - abnormal for sure because it never even flinches above 0 no matter what is going on. I am running out of time to keep fighting this. If only there was some sign of progress or hope...

    ****
So I am thinking it might be time for plan B - install a new hard drive, install fresh Windows. What are the odds that whatever is killing this PC also lives on the 2nd physical drive which contains most of her data files and backups?? Some are on C: - how will I get to them without infecting the new install?

If her data is safe, your plan B may the best and quickest option.
This is how you should proceed.
    Remove secondary drive.
Format primary, install Windows, updates, security programs, etc.

Reinstall secondary drive and scan it with at least couple of scanners (AV, Malwarebytes, some on-line scan, like Kaspersky).

Well, we seem to be back in business after a complete format/re-install of XP. So not so much fixed/resolved as "I give up!! ".

I am curious to know 2 things however
    1) do we really think that this was some form of the Blaster worm? Some new, exotic worm/trojan?
    2) if yes, again the question would be HOW? on a machine w/ SP3, all other XP patches, current Kaspersky and windows firewall, on a machine that only shares a network w/ 2 printers and is only used for medical billing? There was no evidence of anyone going to any websites other than the insurance company and online banking sites - no facebook, Messenger is disabled, etc...

This is not just curiousity, I obviously need to have some idea if possible as to WHAT happened and HOW it happened, to make sure it doesn't happen again and to make sure it isn't lurking on one of the flash drives that we used during this episode. FWIW, this machine (I periodically test all the PC's under my care) had passed the ShieldsUp and LeakTest with flying colors at GibsonResearch (GRC).com.

Thanks again Broni for all your help!
