I have no taskbar or icons after booting windows
2000. I hear the Windows music as if its starting, but nothing on the screen. I have a cable modem and Mcafee virus software which popped up and allowed me to launch a web browser.

    Did this just start?

Have you installed any software lately?

Beings you were able to start Virus Scan did you scan your HD?

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode?

Yes it did just start. Only loaded a pop up stopper recently. Did not run a scan disk. I have had some viruses detected in the past as I download frequently. I haven't started it in safe mode.
I have a parellel Win2k loaded and was able to
    start that.

Try running a Virus Scan on the affected disk/partition to see if the problem may be virus related.

If that doesn't resolve the problem take a look at this article and see if it helps; Safe Boot Mode in Windows 2000

Post back and let us know.

    Problem solved!!!
From the task manager I started a "new task" browsed to netscape.exe, I downloaded and installed netscape and
immediately Mcafee detected and deleted a virus.
    Here's the the Mcafee report.
    File: explore.exe
    Virusname: IRC/Flood.k.dr.c
    FilePath C: \WINNT\SYSTEM32

Chalk one up to dumb luck from a non techhie. Wow, I'm gonna go get some Mountain Dew. Full Sugar, Full Caffeine!!!
