[Inactive] Black screen - need some help please!!

    Hello,

I was over at a friends house the other day and she has a dell xps m140. Another friend of mine was trying to access the internet and i noticed that it was taking about 15 minutes for IE to load so I told my friend I was going to help her. I downloaded a few of the programs on the thread that says an oz of prevention is worth a lb of cure. So half way through running spybot seek and destroy the screen goes black and I get this error message: "Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \Windows\system32\config\SYSTEM
you can attempt to repair this file by starting windosw setup using the original setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair "
well now it loads up the dell screen where i can get to safe mode and to the bios and everything but i tried loading in safe mode, same error, and i tried using last known good configuration, same error. She doesnt have any of the original software because she bought this laptop from another friend of hers. I have the windows XP cd and tried booting from cd rom to see if i could repair from the cd, but couldnt get that to work either. She has a lot of important files on her hard drive, but neither of us can pay for someone to extract them, and i wasnt even sure if that was necessary. she is blaming me for the problems now, because i offered to help her clear her computer of spyware / virus's if someone can please help me I would appreciate it so very much. Thanks
    Michael

    Start here ...

How to recover from a corrupted registry that prevents Windows XP from starting, but note
To attempt a repair install you will need an XP CD of the same Service Pack level as the installed OS .....

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 3 and Create Bootable CD

If you need to slipstream both SP2 & SP3 it is not necessary to burn an SP2 slipstreamed CD - just slipstream SP3 into the SP2 slipstreamed version you produced on the hard drive.

If you succeed in initiating the Repair process use her COA key (on a sticker on computer case), not yours.

okay i think i have the wrong version of windows, like i said she doesnt have the original software. but i have the windows xp pro cd. the setup is different from the tutorial you sent me. instead of asking me to repair windows its showing me the partitions on the computer and which one i want to use for installation

The CD you use to attempt a repair must be at the same Service Pack level as the OS installed on the computer, as I posted above
If the computer has Autoupdate turned on it should have SP3 installed.

If you use a CD with the wrong Service Pack I think that a message to that effect will be shown, but I cannot be sure - it's a long time since I made a repair in XP.

hey like i said the person i got it from has none of the original software and i have windows xp pro edition i think the comp has home edition or some other strange version, can i still repair with the pro edition? also i think it might be easier to just try to recover the data on the HD, and install XP pro, what do u think and if i just try to recover the info on the HD, how do i do that?

    Our posts coincided :)

You can only repair Home with Home and Pro with Pro - your conclusion would seem to be correct.

The COA label on the computer should tell you Home or Pro, but not the SP AFAIK.
You can only make an install of XP from one CD onto one computer. The OS will install fine on another computer, but you will be unable to activate it.

To recover data from the drive you will first need to remove it from the computer, instructions here ....

    Dellâ„¢ M140 Service Manual

Then connect it to another computer using an adaptor such as this .....

    http://www.newertech.com/products/usb2_adaptv2.php

So long as the other computer recognises the drive you can copy data off.

    Let's try something....

Let's see, if we can look at your computer booting from an external source.

You will need USB flash drive to move information from bad computer to a working computer.

You need to download two programs.

    First

ISO Burner this will allow you to burn REATOGO-X-PE ISO to a cd and make it bootable. Just install the programm, from there on it's fairly automatic (Instructions)

    Second

    • Download OTLPE.iso and burn to a CD using ISO Burner. NOTE: This file is 270.3 MB in size so it may take some time to download.
    • When downloaded double click and this will then open ISOBurner to burn the file to CD
    • Reboot your system (Non working computer) using the boot CD you just created.
      • Note. If you do not know how to set your computer to boot from CD follow the steps HERE
    • Your system should now display a REATOGO-X-PE desktop.
    • Double-click on the OTLPE icon.
    • When asked Do you wish to load the remote registry, select Yes
    • When asked Do you wish to load remote user profile(s) for scanning, select Yes
    • Ensure the box Automatically Load All Remaining Users is checked and press OK
    • OTL should now start. Change the following settings
      • Change Drivers to All
      • Change Registry to All
      • Under Custom Scan box paste this in:

        netsvcs
        %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*.exe
        /md5start
        eventlog.dll
        scecli.dll
        netlogon.dll
        cngaudit.dll
        sceclt.dll
        ntelogon.dll
        logevent.dll
        iaStor.sys
        nvstor.sys
        atapi.sys
        IdeChnDr.sys
        viasraid.sys
        AGP440.sys
        vaxscsi.sys
        nvatabus.sys
        viamraid.sys
        nvata.sys
        nvgts.sys
        iastorv.sys
        ViPrt.sys
        eNetHook.dll
        ahcix86.sys
        KR10N.sys
        nvstor32.sys
        ahcix86s.sys
        nvrd32.sys
        symmpi.sys
        adp3132.sys
        mv61xx.sys
        userinit.exe
        explorer.exe
        /md5stop
        %systemroot%\*. /mp /s
        %systemroot%\system32\*.dll /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\Tasks\*.job /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\system32\drivers\*.sys /lockedfiles
        %systemroot%\System32\config\*.sav
    • Press Run Scan to start the scan.
    • When finished, the file will be saved in drive C:\OTL.txt
    • Copy this file to your USB drive.
    • Please post the contents of the C:\OTL.txt file in your reply.
