    Hi everyone,
3 days ago my Vista Home Premium 64 bit OS automatically updated. It asked me to restart, which I did. During the reboot the screen went black/blank and a message said "No signal ". Windows is loading however, as I hear all the right sounds etc. After shutting down I restarted in Safe Mode, which works fine, including the screen. I tried to restore to an earlier date but the problem does not disappear.
I don't think this is a hardware problem, as many other forums suggest to people with similar problems. This problem definetely occurred after the latest update and I believe this is a software problem relating to the Microsoft update files.
Can anyone please give me some idea what to do?

When in safe mode, see if you can roll back to a previous video driver. I'm thinking the problem may be an incompatibility with an updated video driver.

From Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click on your adapter & choose Properties, select the Driver tab & (if possible) click Roll Back Driver.

If Roll Back Driver is not selectable, it means no driver is available for roll back. I'd try installing an updated driver for your display adapter.

    Hi Arie,
thanks for your reply. I have tried your recommended action before I posted my problem - unfortunately to no avail. I have the latest video driver on my machine.
When the machine is booting, the screen shows the mobo logo, then shows some booting features which are all quite normal, and then it used to briefly (approx 5 seconds) show the logo of my video adapter. Now it just gives a flicker of it, meaning the logo disappears in the blink of an eye. At this stage something is happening that should'nt and the message "No signal - digital" is displayed. The screen goes blank and the LED turns to amber. Windows, however keeps on booting, makes the right sounds and I know for a fact it is working. The windows update that causes this problem must have installed a file which is not compatible. I wished I knew which one it might be.
I apprerciate your help and consideration.
    Cheers Axel

It is caused by a driver. How do I know? Because it is working in safe mode, which means the offending driver isn't loading (something that happens in safe mode). Maybe there was a display driver update on Windows Update?

Look further into your display driver. Try uninstalling the driver & reboot with Vista's default driver. Does that work (in normal mode)? Then try reinstalling your display driver.

    Hi Arie,
there was a display driver update on Windows update. I deleted the driver in Safe Mode and rebooted with Vista's default driver. This works fine, but naturally it disables almost all the advantages of my 8800 GTX. I have downloaded the latest Nvidia driver for Vista (64), however I still get the same problem.
Thanks for your kind help anyway. I appreciate your thoughts and advice.
    Cheers Axel

    Try an older driver instead.

    Hi Arie,
I got it finally working. I went back to the Nvidea site and downloaded the latest driver again. This time it worked. Funny, how sometimes things don't work at the first try and then suddenly it works fine at the second attempt!
Thanks for your help and thoughts.
    Cheers Axel

    Great.

Yea, that's why in those cases I first try an older version of the driver. Then I wait till the next one comes out to try that one...
