Well here's proof you should leave well enough alone. PC was taking a few extra seconds to boot, I think during POST, so I decided to update my BIOS, now the PC won't get past the video card info when I power up.
This is a couple month old Intel D845BG, P4, 98se. Everything was working pretty good till "Intel Express BIOS Update" declared: "CMOS/GPNU Checksum bad"
I had read the readme while installer was in control and it said something about in event of trouble, press F1. Well it acted like the BIOS was all installed untill the message of doom. The next option was to F1/Setup or some network option, I pressed F1.
Then while I was looking for a way to back out of my new BIOS I checked all the settings and the only bootable devices where I could normally define "removable device, HDD ( my other HD (a 60GXP is out for warranty replacement)) or CD's, it now only had removable device available. I made sure it was enabled (default). Above that on the "Boot" menu were two new items USB and some AXT? or some such network option, they were both enabled as well. finding no way back, I exited the setup, not saving changes.
It won't boot from A or a bootable Ghost CD, though the CD spins up. The HDD spins up too but no activity.
If anyone can offer help , I would certainly apreciate it. Can I change the MB setup jumpers and do something there?.

Haaa I lernt lesun leve welnuf alown

    Thank You for reply Luga.
Looks like it's last resort time.
I had consulted Intels site before all this started. This is the second BIOS upd, first upd disabled USB.
Just call me BLOCKHEAD. I did everything by the book except when exiting the new BIOS setup I didn't save changes, because I did't make any. Awful strange the BIOS wouldn't have an option to boot from HD, isn't it? How about not saving changes, wouldn't it exit with the same crummy default settings it had when opening?
I just tried making two bootable FD's with new BIOS on them, set the MB jumper to recover, but still no activity from A:
I have a USB CD-RW available. Could I make a bootable CD with the BIOS on it and try that route?
I'm going to look at AMI's site.
    Thanks

    Item 2.
Do you have a bootable floppy with the BIOS upgrade file/s on it?

    More info here

    Thank You again Luga,
Apparently It don't see A:. I have two FD's created by inserting in a win98 PC (not 98se) A: drive, then >start >run >then typing "format a: /s" both reporting success. then double clicking the BIOS update file from Intel site "PT84510A.86A.0021.P03" with additional ID of ".0202251254" visible from screen (dated 3/7/02) that contains "run.bat" which inflates the "DISK.IMG, RAWRITE.EXE, TOKEN" files to A:, again reporting success with both disks..
I tried booting with FD in drive A:, letting it stew, with the MOBO jumper removed Then rebooting with FD removed after resetting MOBO jumper. I did this four times (twice with each FD). Never did I see response from A: drive, neither noise nor LED flash, just contuously lit. Then after powering down and reinstalling jumper on, removing FD and power-up I did this 4 times giving A: atleast 1/2 hour last time. After all that it just displays Video card info on screen, no beep codes. Evidently it don't see A:.
    I have consulted the
    "Intel® Desktop Board
    D845BG/D845PT
    Technical Product Specification "
    AKA "AZ505201.pdf "
    obtained here
    http://developer.intel.com/design/motherbd/bg/bg_prdoc.htm
All of the above was according to the info from Intel, obtained and studied prior to this day.
I have no vast experience with all this, the only two possible foepahs (sp?) I can see are: 1.A win98 startup disk will work in a win98 system, right? 2. Saving my orig BIOS settings would not have helped given that the new BIOS didn't even have the same Boot options (HDD, CD) available.
I am at this point trying to find out where to get the initial production BIOS "PT84510A.86A ", flashed to my BIOS chip or find a chip with that BIOS on it already, all assuming I can remove the BIOS chip, I'll check that next.
    I appreciate your respoanse.
    Thanks again.
    Sincerely,
    Bonehead

I found it, it's on the firmware hub, it's soldered in, real nice job too.

I tried booting from a USB CD also did not work I replaced it with new MOBO. Boots real fast again,
It comes with same BIOS version as old one had.
It'll be a long... long time before I update it.

I told my parts supplier what happened. The owner where I bought my MOBO said, after the BIOS update process, it pronounced the "CMOS/GPNU checksum bad ", I pressed F1, the machine restarted and BIOS setup ran, he said I should have saved the defaults on exit. I didn't make changes and the boot menu showed all the devices it saw (it didn't see HDD or 2 CD's) as selected as default so I exited w/o saving. Well... what I had left was a dead machine. I sent the (#1) MOBO back today, it might get fixed for not much.
Maybe my experience, rocky as it may be will help someone.
