My bios has been underclocking my cpu for a while, so I was trying to reset the cpu ratio in bios. I have an athlon xp 1800+ which can run at 1.53gHz. Mine has been running at 1150. So I was browsing around the bios to find the ratio multiplier, which I found. I changed it from auto to 10x. (The range was 6x to 14x). My computer basically doesn't boot any more, not even to a degree where I can get back into bios to reset it to auto. My monitor simply blinks its power save light which is what it does when the compter is off. The power switch does not respond. The restart button makes the cdrom lights reset, but I'm not sure if it does anything else. I've tried unplugging it for a while before restart, though it makes no difference.

I don't think I could have burned the cpu out unless the 10x ratio was a massive overclocking attempt (which I doubt because the cpu was top of the line when the mobo was mid-range). But I can't think of any other reason I would be completely locked out of my system, so maybe I am out of luck. Any suggestions would be more than welcome. I bought and assembled the parts of my computer 2 years ago with a few upgrades since...

    windows xp pro
    athlon xp 1800+ (1.53gHz)
    msi kt4v mobo
    1 gig ddr pc2100 RAM
60 gb 7200rpm HDD western digital
    80 gb 7200rpm HDD maxtor
geforce nvidia 128mb ddr agp video
    300w antec case/ power

To add to Matt's reply ....

I have the same CPU running in an Asus A7V333 mobo - mobo should be set to jumperfree mode (if possible). BIOS settings should be :

    CPU Speed 1533
    CPU frequency multiplyer 11.5 x
    CPU/PCI frequency 133/33

Provided that the mobo is in jumperfree mode the CPU speed can be set to Manual/1150/1533/1917 - choose 1533.

To clear cmos - pull the cover off the case, (unplug the machine first), disconnect the internal ATX power connector from the MoBo, move the CMOS jumper to pins 2&3 for 5-6 seconds, rejumper CMOS on 1&2, reconnect internal power connector, plug the power cord into a recepticle and boot up. Voila...

    ;)
