Hi,when i start my PC it does not detect the secondary IDE devices (dvd/cd). There is no problem with the primary IDE (HDD). I swapped the IDE cables around to test and the results are the same, so the cables is ok.

I then connect the DVD as a slave with my hard disk set as the master on the primary channel and it detects it, so the DVD player is also fine.

When i connect the above setup to the secondary channel it does not detect the hard drive or the DVD player.

From the symptoms you describe there may be a hardware fault with the secondary IDE controller.

I suggest you go into Device Manager and uninstall the controller and reboot to enable Windows to reinstall it.

    Post back with results

Done that, still the same. I am going to ask a stupid question...if BIOS does not detect the secondary device will it still show in Device Manager?

No - Windows will not know that it exists if the BIOS does not detect it.

I'm guessing you've already checked this but just to make sure. You haven't disabled the secondary IDE in the BIOS have you?

    Good day everybody,

No Wildfire, no changes to the BIOS yet, but i suppose that will be my next
    move.

The way i see it, if the IDE device (DVD) and IDE cable is in working
condition and BIOS does not detect it, then the problem can only be in the BIOS itself?

Not necessarily - the bios can only detect components connected to the motherboard - if the connection has failed then the BIOS will not detect them.

I think you have a hardware problem on the motherboard - either the secondary IDE socket has failed or there is some other failure in the controller.

By all means check out the BIOS - a reset would not go admiss, but I would not be holding my breath :)

    Agree with Pete here,
Double check your BIOS but it really does look like a hardware failure.

Thank you guys, i hate what i am going to do next (take the easy way out!). I have two
SATA connectors onboard, so i will rather buy a new DVDRW and CDRW...problem solved!

Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to you all!!
