    Hi all!

In System Properties - Advanced - "Start and Restore" - Settings, there´s a box "Show list of OS during XX seconds ", wherer XX is adjustable. The box can be ticked or unticked.
On my system, by default at setup, the box is ticked and the time set to 30 seconds.

When I press the button to start the computer, I suspect that the BIOS boot is done after 19 seconds when the black WinXP screen appears with the moving blue dots in the bar. This screen is there until 29 seconds and then it goes black and soon the blue welcome screen appears.

Am I correct in assuming that the computer is "idling - waiting" from 19 to 29 seconds and at 30 seconds it starts to load WinXP?

Am I correct in assuming that I can untick that box since I only have one OS, no multi boot computer, and have it start 10 seconds quicker?

(Not that it´s important, I´d just like to know what the thing is up to ...... ...... and I´m too much of a chicken to untick before asking.)

    Thanks for Your time,
    Christer

    Christer,

The 30 secs is the time the computer waits until it loads the default OS.

Be bold - change it or untick it :D

    Christer,

Unticked the box, shut down, booted up again. Doesn't seem to make any difference, but I have only one OS on this particular m/c.

    Hi PeteC!

I was actually bold ...... ...... and unticked and like You, I noticed no difference.

When I wrote my question I did it from my memory of starting the computer. The computer isn´t idling during the black WinXP screen, there´s disc activity.

If you only have one OS version loaded, that parameter is not active. Has no effect whatever.

If you like, you could disable the XP Splash screen to see if there are any messages appearing that the splash screen covers up.

To do that, you'll need to edit the boot.ini file to add " /noguiboot" right after "/fastdetect" - without the quotes but with a space before the forward slash.

To edit that file, which should be located on the C drive, right click on it, choose "Open With" and choose Notepad. Make the above addition, close Notepad and tell it "yes" when it asks if you want to save changes.

To get the splash screen back, just open boot.ini in Notepad again, remove the change you made, save it when you close it and things will be back to the way they were, splash screen enabled.

    Thanks for the tip!

Nothing whatsoever showed and I guess that the splash screen is there to prevent impatient people from ruining their keyboards ......
