A thousand pardons if this is addressed somewhere here. I searched for this information, but didn't find it yet. My new laptop runs WinXP SP2- I was using Win95 --feel free to laugh now; its okay with me -- before this.

I felt I understood enough about what temp files were in Win 95. They are apparently way different now. Just what's in c:\documents and settings\Jane\local settings\temp? It started out at about 6 M or so on 8 June and is currently 18.4 M.

That's the temp folder of WinXP. You should empty this folder every now & then, as it will keep growing :(

You can use Windows XP's Disk Cleanup Tool to do this automatically for you, see: How to Automate the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP

Temporary Internet Files will be in c:\documents and settings\{USERNAME}\local settings\Temporary Internet Files

To see them you'll have to un-check Hide protected operating system files from Folder Options > View

    Renamed it OldTemp

Thanks for the prompt response. When I run disc cleanup, it adresses the directory to which you refer, but doesn't address the directory of my original post.

I renamed the directory OldTemp, and restarted. It created a new temp directory with one file - jusched.log. So far everything seems to run okay; I just didn't want to blow away something that was important. My penchant for snooping around files has has caused a few Safe Mode restarts since I first ran Win95 and will probably continue to do so now.

    Hello fanofpi and welcome :)

You're right, the folder you referenced is not the TIF.

It is a temp folder for things like software installations or updates.

You can clean that folder out. Some of the files will not delete in normal mode, for those, do it in safe mode.

    Regards - Charles

    Thank You

Thank you for the confirmation, a thanks I intend to show with a subscription as soon as my son is done abusing it for college books.

Now if I can just take the training wheels off the laptop.

Remember when turning on 32BFA was such a big deal?
