This is other software site so I hope its the right place to ask, where the best site to download drivers. I went to one "free" and after giving out my Birthday, they wanted home phone and address, so I backed off on the "free" one. Hindsight being 20/20 I did run into one that charged $2.99 per download, now after hours of searching I wish I had saved that web link. I don't mind paying, or giving our my email address for a free download. What I am trying to download is a driver for a 156PSP-F30 modem with a pctel chipset PCT789T-C1

You can go to the Driver Guide. Or you can go to the manufacture support.

I've always found the manufacturers site to be the best, but that also could mean the individual component manufacturer as well!
eg: I just bought a 2nd hand laptop and the lan driver from the realtek site worked where the one on the laptop manufacturers site didn't, this hasn't happened to me that often luckily! ;)
    Best Luck

    Frank,

is this the same modem as your other thread, i.e. you are looking for Win98SE drivers?

...if so, worth mentioning the OS here, else folks will just be thinking "why not go to the PCTel site ", but they don't seem to support Win98 anymore

    best wishes, HJ.

Re Question on the best website to download drivers

Thanks! everyone. Each response helps and or at times reinforces what I have experienced already. And HJ, I do need a driver for Win98 second edition or Win98 SE. I am trying to be carefull of not cross threading this site. Being a mechanic for 20 years, I know what a pain cross threading can be. :).

Sven, I have not checked out Drivers.com yet. I just hope its not like a free site I checked out recently. That site forced you to check a box that said:
"I am interested in a power chair for myself or a love one ". Followed by your home address and home phone number. It doesn't end there, but again I don't want to cross thread this "bolt" ?:) I really just one a power driver for myself and my love one, my modem. jk. :)

At this point, I figuire its ok to pay some money for a driver, it should still be cheaper than buying another modem. So if someone knows of a paying site that does not charge and arm or a leg, I sure am all ears for that.

I noticed after I install my modem, I get a prompt to check Microsoft website for best driver., It than lists about 15 different files I need. At least that is what I assume is happening. Incidentally, I have a ethernet connection to my router while I am troubleshooting. One website gave me, about 8 of them. I hope If I pay for a driver its, one that has all the files, for the device to work. But this is starting to overlap into hardware site, so that will be my next area to post regarding this. Thank again everyone for the posts, I hope others benefit also. Frank

I have had a problem with my laptop and drivers before. I had to BIOS and look for the service tag.

Conexant (who seem to have bought out PC Tel) appear to have a generic HSP driver for Win98 - for free ;)

(PC Tel make/made "winmodems" so HSP would seem to be the way to go, I'd guess)

    Conexant support is here: http://www.conexant.com/support/

...click on "HSP modem support "; then "HSP modem support drivers "; you have to agree to their disclaimer (but at least you don't have to be pretend to be interested in power chairs  phoo-eee!) - after agreeing, you get to a download link for a 2.7MB zipfile

unzipping this produces lots of files, amongst which is a file "setup.exe" - looks like that's the one to use

Frank: you may perhaps need your Windows 98SE CD during the setup process

    ==

Assuming that the setup process goes smoothly, you can check whether Windows reckons that all is well by:

Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
...to raise "System Properties ", you want the "Device Manager" tab; and you want to "View devices by type ":

Look down the list to Modems; expanding the entry, you should be able to see your modem; select your modem by clicking on it, and use the "Properties" button.

If all is well, you should see the words "The device is working properly "

    Good Luck :)

Let us know how you get on, pls? Particularly, if it says that it can't find some file(s), let us know a couple of the names, which will help work out what's happening.

    best wishes, HJ

(PS you may still not be able to connect, but at least you will know that the driver is working OK - which is the first hurdle. Next stop: Dial-Up Networking)

Best is Driverguide.com for legacy hardware IMHO

I find Driverguide.com is best for non-supported hardware drivers. But be sure to check to see if hardware is still supported by looking for a "legacy products" link. Manufactures always want to push their latest product. But most will support legacy products somewhere on their site. If not, use Driverguide.com
