I "WAS" dual booting win2000 as C: and XP as D: (UNTILL) i replaced a ghost image of win2000 to C:..........
(C:\> is fine now but can't boot to XP)

Now, (even thou the boot.ini menu is there) XP pro doesn't boot cos a number of files are missing in C:.........

Naturally, i want xp to boot...i tried this and it was a No-Go...
Boot'd from the XP cd and select'd "R" to repair and it wanted to "Delete" (L) the folder or make a new one........Needless to say, I want to keep my stuff in XP...Dah!!

How can i get it to dual boot properly?

    2K is NT5.0 and XP is NT5.1.

When you did the XP install it tweaked the 2K stuff so it could deal with NT5.1.

My guess is you ghosted back a standard NT5.0 load of 2K.

If so, a reinstall of XP might be necessary. Not sure if any of the repair features can deal with this or not. You might try the XP recovery console and fixboot. You might need fixmbr as well.

Take a look at Q314058 for instructions and a brief description of each available command.

Now I always thought, correct me if I'm wrong, that Windows was always restricted to the main drive, in the case of windows that would be C:\. That would mean if you had a C;\ drive that you couldn't put a bootable windows OS onto a D:\ drive. I'm not completely sure about this for XP though. Now, why MS would do such a thing is beyond me. Your going to just have to expect this kind of inconvenience, among other problems, if you continue to use XP. Win2K is better than XP, its been out a while, dosn't require such high specks, not as expensive etc... XP really dosn't have anything W2K does except for that Activation system that locks you out if it thinks your doing somthing wrong (even though its what's wrong). SO don't bother Dual Booting Win2K and XP, XP is nothing but a scam OS that people want just because of MS's advertizing campaign. Drop it. Win2K is the best desktop PC OS out there...well except for Linux and MacOS, FreeBSD and stuff like that... So if you really want a dual boot, try one of them. Well worth the cost.

    BDBD:p  ;)

Not only wrong but way wrong. Wrong (and should have stated you were unsure) about 2K, NT4, NT3.5, etc. etc.
