For the cost I have found the below to be very good.

Kerio free for home use Firewall.

AVG7 $30 for two years as the Anti-Virus.

You can get AVG AV for free, all it will cost you is your email address, and that is so you can get a registration code, no spam.
BillyBob mentioned the Professional Edition, not free but more than worth the price.
Kerio Personal Firewall gets my vote.

I think the best option is to get a router (hardware) as a firewall. It masks everything so people cant even find you when your online. But if you want to get a free one, what I used to use was Sygate Personal Firewall, you can get it at http://www.download.com . Some people have bad things to say, but it more than worked for me.

The Router is and excellent idea.

But you still need a software Firewall to control what goes out of the machine.

The Router does take quite a load off of the software firewall on the incoming side.

I downloaded the kerio firewall....thanks for the referal. Now I keep getting the msg (from differents IP "s) about allowing echo requests and another IP wanting to send an ICMP packet to me...

without having to continuously hit the "allow" button or whatever, are these OK to allow and by setting the default allow them all the time, or do they come from another IP other than my provider?

All those pings should be considered internet background noise. They could come from worm pings, the last webpage you visited to see if you are still there, or your ISP. The best thing to do not to allow, and go into Admininstration of Kerio, put the slider up to Deny Unknown and you will not get those constant notices.

A Router will keep that **** out almost completely with no load on the firewall at all.

I used to get HAMMERED with them also until I installed the router.
