I'd like to backup everything on my C:\ containing my XP Home to E:\ a new empty hard drive that's also formatted NFTS.

Should I use XP Home's backup or XXCOPY?

I don't think I want to have a dual boot because I don't want to slow down start time by having to select which drive each time.

    Thanks,

    Kerry

Since I just spent several hours yesterday reading the info on the xxcopy.com site I'll share a couple of thoughts. I have been using a small linux based program to clone my drives.
I am using dual boot, WinMe on C: and XPPro on partition D:. the extra time to boot to one or the other is only about 8 seconds. I have set auto boot at 5 seconds and the process loads quickly.
I ran Automated System Recovery yesterday to back up Partition D: to Partition G:. D: ( 5.5 gig) was saved to g: file size(3.96 gig) and a diskette was created. Restore is, boot from XP install disk, select Automatic System Recovery when asked. The diskette will be asked for then recovery will continue.
I will do a backup today using the linux utility then erase d: windows and try a recovery with the ASR, since I want to verify that it works as it should. My former method takes about 10 cds so if ASR works I sure want to know.

On the XXcopy.com site in the faq section they state that successfull bootable restore of WinXP isn't possible yet , maybe coming soon though.

    Thanks all,

    Correction to my post.

I now have my C:\ drive w/XP Home and a D:\ drive that contains the SystemWorksPro Ghost of C: I also keep folders in D:\ that serve as backup locations for my FrontPage webs and other important C:\ docs.

To my surprise the Ghosting process reformatted the D:\ drive thereby deleting the E:\ partition. I had forgotten that E:\ was a partition of D:\. All along I thought it had been a partition of C:\. . No big loss. It actually makes things less confusing.

I also made a Norton Ghost Disk (floppy) so that I could access the D: drive in an emergency. I did a complete system check and Norton seems to be happy with both drives.

I didn't do the switch jumper game. I'll just trust that it will work.

    Again, thanks all,

    Kerry
