I have just installed a nice Firefox addon, IE Tab, which allows me to, when using FF, open up the current page in a new FF tab, using the IE engine.

I want this in the event of a problem when viewing a page in FF--I can quickly bring it up in IE, instead of having to hunt for the IE icon, open up IE, and then copy/paste the link into IE.

Anyways, one of the options is IE Compatibility Mode. I have several:

    IE7 Standards Mode
    IE8 Standards Mode
    IE8 Forced Standards Mode
    IE9 Standards Mode
    IE9 Forces Standards Mode

From before IE7 came out, I really haven't been using IE as my everyday browser, so I really haven't kept up with which standards mode is best. All I want is to view a given page correctly, if it doesn't display as intended in Firefox. Which of these compatibility modes would be best, or be most likely to give me the best results?

later versions of IE have greater support for HTML 5 and CSS 3, thus IE9 Standards mode will be able to display an HTML 5 page more accurately than IE7 Standards mode.

IE has never been able to support true HTML standards as it has 'its own way of rendering Web pages ". Standards mode is an effort by IE to be standards compliant.

Because of IE's goofy rendering engines over the years, it now must attempt to retain some backward compatibility, using Quirks mode. For example, pages coded 5 years ago exclusively for IE, using IE HTML tags, must somehow be rendered in the newest IE browsers, as are pages coded using standard HTML 4x and HTML 5 tags. IE is still behind other browsers in support for HTML 5 and CSS 3, the newest standards.

OK, it sounds like IE9 Standards Mode would be the best option.

    Thanks.
