I just bought a Benq DW1620 16x Dvd R/RW Dual Layer Int IDE OEM

    http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/prod...2hvd19wcm9kdWN0X292ZXJ2aWV3&product_uid=80836

No software, but I installed as a master with my DVD player as slave (basically I swapped out for a cd rw).

The new DVD RW will recognise DVDs and play them fine, but will not recognise ANY blank DVDs or Blanks CDs, so I can't copy anything and Nero will not even find the drive. I got the DVDs from the same store and they were recommended with this product.

I flashed to latest firmware and still no joy. WindowsXP installed a driver fine. What can this be? Is there some good free DVD burning software I can try in case it's Nero (5.5) that does not like it?

Also when I add a blank DVD or CD it changes to read "CD Drive" in Windows from DVD RW

Also in Device manager it reads 2x16x4x16x - whereas the store weblink reads:

    Read Speed 40x (CD) / 16x (DVD)
    Write Speed 40x (CD) / 16x (DVD-R) / 16x (DVD+R) / 2.4x (DVD+R DL)
    CD / DVD Rewrite Speed 24x (CD) / 4x (DVD-RW) / 4x (DVD+RW)

Have I been sent the wrong product do you think?

    Many thanks in advance.

The problem here is that Nero 5.5 became 'obsolete' long before dual layer DVD writers were on the market and updates for Nero 5.5 to cater for later models of burners also ceased with 55.10.54 back in Nov 2003. Therefore it does not recognise any newer drives.

You either need Nero 6 or look at this thread, which relates to CD burning, but some of the links may be helpful ....

In case anyone has a similar problem:

I looked at the site in the thread you linked Pete (nonags.com wonderful site) and downlaoded software called CDBurner XP Pro3 and am very impressed. The software is free and excellent - I would highly recommend it to anyone.
