    Hi Friends,
I have my PC connected to an old Toshiba Tecra 8000 laptop, via a Belkin "Direct Connect" network hub. All was working well until I upgraded the Laptop from ME to Win 2k pro. I have followed the instructions to the letter, but the computers won't see one another.
I have run System File checker in case some files were missing, but nothing seems to have changed. I then went to Admin tools and looked at Network, and got the following report:-
"SNMP Service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\current version because it is missing or misconfigured ".
Lastly I'm very puzzled because Belkin refer in their troubleshooter page in the manual, under "Network Identification" click on "Access Control" make sure "Share level access Control" is checked..........but I don't seem to have this tab, Further on it refers to "Primary Network Logon "...can't find that, and "Check that "Browse Master" is set to "Enabled" and LM Announce" is set to "Yes ".........these too are not visible to me!!!
I don't know is it's of help but when I check my Internet connection, these boxes are there, so perhaps I've got the wrong sort of connection to configure. The Belkin hub itself seems to be working OK........well it was before.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Richard.

Can't help you directly with the Belkin device since I've never seen one and have no idea exactly what it is or does.

As to the troubleshooter issues, they are describing the network window you see on a Win9x system (and maybe ME - don't have one around to look at).

W2K, as you have noticed, isn't laid out in the same fashion. You should be seeing something more like

    1. Share Level Access Control isn't a feature you set from here on 2K. You do need to have (from the pic above) the same boxes checked as you see there. The Compaq piece shouldn't be on your system at all.
    2. Browse Master - go to services and stop it. Then disable it.
    3. LM Announce - almost certainly will be turned on. Services again and check to make sure that LMHosts is running.
    4. Primary Network Logon per se doesn't exist either I don't think.

As for the "SNMP Service is ignoring extension agent key software\microsoft\current version because it is missing or misconfigured" bit - check the event logs on your 2K system. There should be a similar error there with more detail. Post the error message and be sure to include the event id and source.

    Hi Newt,
Thanks very much indeed for taking the trouble to come back on this, I have to confess it's driving me round the bend!!!
The Belkin "Direct connect" USB device, is used to connect my PC to my laptop, and appears in System, hardware, device manager as 2 components........1 a network adaptor, and 2 as a USB controller. Both are shown to be working correctly. As I mentioned before this thing worked perfectly under Win ME, but not now. Following your advice I looked in Services, Browse Master is not shown, and LM announce doesn't either.
I'm sorry but I haven't been able to replicate the "SNMP Service error, so I can't find a log entry for it........would the original one still be logged? If so where please do I find it, I have searched without success. On the Belkin.com site you can under the "Direct Connect" product entry find a downloadable manual, I don't know if you can spare the time to look, maybe a professional eye might see something I can't!!! Any further ideas you can come up with would be very much appreciated!
    Sincerely,
    Richard.

Your event logs retain information until they are pushed out to make room or some similar arrangement depending on how you have it set. Should hold information for at least a week and maybe much longer depending on your settings and the amount of activity. Look in all three of them for information.

Services - you should see Browser (description = Computer Browser) and LMHosts (description = TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper).

Browser service should be off. LMHosts service should be on.

    Hi Newt again,
Under System Information/Services, I see "Computer Browser.....Running Auto. On TCP/IP Net Bios Helper this too is Running Auto. How do I change the first one? Edit, have found that and stopped it!
Also sorry but I don't know where to find these log files.........
Sorry to be so dim. Thanks in anticipation.
    Sincerely,
    Richard.
Edit........I've found a log file SCESRV which seems relevant. I am forbidden to post an attachment in this forum, can I Email it to you? Thanks R.

Feel free to pop a copy to me at either newt.vail@pmusa.com (if before around 2200 EST today) or nvail@ctc.net otherwise. I'll post any part that seems to relate back to this thread.

If you post it thru the bbs link, it will go away without me even seeing it.

You can find your event logs by start~programs~administrative tools~event viewer

They are a great resource for any NT system. Often contain excellent information for troubleshooting. Many won't make much sense but there is the autolink thing (which rarely finds info but will occasionally) or you can to go M$ online help and use the event id & source and find an article that may well give you an answer.
