I have Windows XP on my computer. About three seconds after I turn on the computer, there is a loud beep. I otherwise don’t get this beep sound at all . Only when I turn on the computer do I get this loud beep sound. Can anyone figure out how to get rid of this sound? Thank you very much.

Ummm...I think it is supposed to be there. It is a system beep, and there are codes for them. I know that mine beeps once when it starts, and then once again when the Windows hypnotic blue bar comes up (it tries to tell you to give all your money to Microsoft, so Don't Look at It!!) and that is my queue to plug the modem back in on my hands and knees under the desk when I have to force it to find its lease.

This is perfectly normal behaviour on most, if not all PC's - it is the BIOS beep code and you cannot get rid of it.

A single beep just after powering up indicates that there was no error during POST - Power On Self Test.

The time to worry is when you get a series of beeps - below for Award Bios, no doubt others same/similar :

Long beeps in an endless loop - no memory installed or detected

One long beep followed by three short beeps - video card not found or video memory bad

High frequency beeps when system is working - CPU overheating, system running at lower frequency

Thank you all for your messages. But I neglected to mention that I just bought a new monitor and I never had this beep sound with my old monitor. My new monitor is an LCD monitor with built-in speakers. Will that make a difference in your answers? Thank you very much.

Not necessarily - these beeps come from the PC speaker (inside the case) - immediately after POST nothing is running bar the BIOS. The OS has not started to load at this precise point. No beeps from the case suggest that the internal speaker is not connected or installed.

This may be a feature of your LCD monitor - I am not familiar with these - check out the manual. The beep may be as the monitor kicks in as the basic driver is loaded. My CRT 'clicks' at this stage as if a 'relay' is cluncking in, but it's more likely to be the tube voltage being applied.

    Why worry?
