Have an Asus lapto K70IC with a Slimtype DS4E1S CD/DVD device. The problem is that it suddenly can not recognize factory music CDs but CAN recognize and play DVDs and Blue Ray. This has made me think it is a software or registry issue. Have tried multiple CDs and DVDs and always the same. No CD is recognized, the device just sits and when I double click it opens and asks for a disc, etc., etc.
I updated the Asus firmware for the device, still same problem. It used to play all discs. Started uninstalling any device/music software but so far no change. Any idea, suggestions?

I should think that if it was a hardware issue, it wouldn't read anything...

Thanks for suggestions. I have not solved the problem but have found that other Program CDs also play but still no music CDs. All DVDs still play. Have uninstalled disc player software but no change and have now installed new codec pack from K-Lite, still the same. Win 7 codec, still the same. When I insert a music CD, I hear the first sounds of it loading and then it stops. Given that it plays every disc but music still makes me think it is software related. Anyone have any further ideas.

Check the Autoplay settings for Music CDs. Also, you may have corrupted DRM settings.

Thanks Tony T. Checked the autoplay settings, was OK. Ahhh! The DRM settings is a good thought. Where would I find that? Is it in WinMediaPlayer or somewhere else? As the problem is only music cds, you may have hit on something.

Seen where it would read one and not the other. If that is what you are talking about.

So far have not found a solution to this. I have uninstalled anything to do with audio playback including Windows media center, and the BD ROM drive.
It still plays all DVD and Blue Ray, all original program discs as well. It does NOT play factory audio CD discs or home made backup program discs.
I am suspicious of something to do with DRM management. However I am not sure where to find anything to do with DRM.
In particular within the registry where I think something was changed/added/corrupted to do with DRM.
When I put a music cd in the drive, I hear the beginning sound of it loading but it suddenly stops, which is why I think that when it recognizes the disc it stops loading due to DRM. I can't be sure but I wonder.
Any suggestions on how to check this issue.

My latest update is the following:

Used Windows Restore to a much earlier date when things worked, and still no change.

I remembered that I had a portable DVD/CD player and plugged it in and tested all format discs and all played fine.

I assume, but correct me if I am wrong, that the portable player is using the same software that is in the computer and therefore, given the fact that it played everything, it now looks like the drive itself in the computer is somehow broken and won't play CDs.

This is, of course incredibly odd, as it will recognize some of my original factory program discs. No music and no CD-R or CD-RW discs

    I have no other ideas.

Thanks for that detail. It leads me to think it is the hardware especially after all the tests I have run. I'm contacting Asus to see what they will do.

    hello garsar...

i'm also using a K70IC notebook and have experienced the same problem as yours... after a few more weeks, my drive became unusable since it won't even read any type of optical disc anymore... :(

i'm just wondering, has Asus provided you with a DIY solution to this issue?

I think the drives are faulty. When I plugged in an outboard DVD drive and it worked fine, was pretty convincing to me, and Asus, that it wasn't a software issue. They gave me an RMA # and I am sending just the drive (had to convince them of that) for replacement or repair. Don't know if it will be free but they didn't hesitate to understand the problem. You'll see in earlier posts where I did just about everything to try and solve it.
If you get set with Asus and need advice on removing the optical drive, let me know on this thread.
