I've just set up a simple sever at work to house our ever growing storage needs. We're running 3-2k machines, 1-98SE, 2-MAC(os 9) & 1-Digital Minilab(2k base)
The basic networking i've managed. The question's about the server(running 2K pro)....It's a box that i've brought from home to use for the time being....It has 120 GB striped RAID broken into 3 partitions. Beings as it was "serving" the same purpose at home, I just cleaned up the drives(partitions) and moved all of my files to one partition.
I want to keep the machine logged on as admin at work, but would like to restrict access to my partition by password(from local requests inparticular) I feel like permissions is oreintated more for remote access....(witch has worked for the other boxs on the network)
....am i just overlooking the obvious????

If that partition isn't shared no one on the (peer to peer I assume) can see it. You really can't clamp down the security of that partition without a domain security policy.
The only way anyone else on the network can see that partition is typing the path \\computername\drive letter$
Most people don't know about that so unless you have some very sensitive info on there I wouldn't worry about it.

Access over the network is not my concern here. You are correct, no one that I work with is going to know about MSs $ .... That's half the problem!
I dont have "sensitive data" that im concerned with hideing.... I just dont want one of my coworkers to go ramrodding through my files on my day off and accidently delete 30+ GBs of stuff i still have on there. I'm talking about when they're physically use that machine....

    Thanx

How about go to the root folders of that drive right click properties / security tab / and deny any users except you.

I think i was just looking at permissions so much i talked myself out of the fact that it was what i needed to change....

phattooth - are you running NTFS on the 2K "server "?

    If so, good.

If not, you can get lots more security options with it than with FATxx.
