A few details of the problem(s) you are experiencing would be a great help :)

This is my teenage daughters machine and I have been blessed with fixing it. (grrrrrr)

    1. All references, icons and shortcuts to Internet Explorer are gone. The only way I can access IE is through Windows Update.
    2. I cannot perform an online virus scan. I get a Microsoft error and IE shuts down.
    3. Multiple pop ups. One of them is to install IE6, but it goes directly to a different EULA for "Advanced Searchbar" and installs it instead.
    4. Went to Add/Remove to uninstall Advanced Searchbar but it keeps coming back.
    5. Spybot brings up several spyware progs, I clean them and they are back after reboot.
    6. Norton's did not find a virus but has detected a spyware dll it cannot delete.
    7. I have spent hours cleaning this thing and not getting it fixed.

Thanks for that - just what our HJT experts require (and I'm not one of them :D - although I have spotted a few problems!)

This computer is very infected, and one of those infections is a rootkit, which hides files and allows other malicious files to be downloaded/installed and hidden......keyloggers, RATs, Trojans, etc., that steal passwords, credit card info, etc etc. Sometimes it's impossible to tell what all changes have been made to system files, registry, security settings etc. You should seriously consider reformatting and starting with a fresh installation of Windows, but if you'd like to proceed with cleaning up the current install, I will do my best to help you ferret out everything and restore the computer to a safe working state. Let me know if you wish to proceed.

    Restoring

Restoring is exactly what I'm doing right now. I figured it was to much of a mess to fix, corrupted registry and all. I found a way to make a restore disk with software HP had on the computer and am in the process of restoring now. Thanks to everyone who tried to help.

Thanks for that info. I've been reading about that lately but had no idea it was causing problems on this pc. Is it not safe to play the CDs on the computer?

I'd suggest trashing the Sony cds with Digital Rights Management. There's at least a partial list in this topic.
