I operate Windows 98. I think I once had "Backup" in Accessories. Somehow it has disappeared. I have had some problems with my Games in Accessories and totally rebooted my Windows 98 but this did not restore my "backup" in accessories. If I go to Start\Programs\WindowsExplorer anc click accessories, there is a Backup file there. If I click on it, there are two files: reports and system. The file Reports shows a record of my past backups. The file System showsa file Catalog & several Datfiles and an Application called Pnpwtape.exe (version 1.20.12b).

If I go to Start\Programs there is a Backup there, too, but when I click on it, nothing happens - nothing opens up.

I think my Backup must be here somewhere but must have lost some valuable file or something in order for it to work. Can you help me?

Check to see if you have msbackup.exe on your hard drive. By default it's located in this folder.
    Code:
    C:\Program Files\Accessories\Backup
If it's there, double click on it to see if it works. If it does, make a new shortcut for it in your start menu. If it isn't there or doesn't work you can reinstall it by going to add>remove programs and then clicking on the windows setup tab. I'm not using a 98 puter right now so I sort of have to go by memory here. I think you have to click on accesories (maybe system tools) and then on a details button at the bottom. This should get you to a list of available accesories. Put a check-mark next to backup. If backup has a check-mark by it, uncheck it and click apply or OK (not sure) and continue until you're out of add>remove programs. Reboot the computer. Then, go back and re-check it. You may be prompted for your win98 cd for this depending on how your system is set up. Sorry I can't be more exact but it should be something quite close to this. Just don't use 98 enough anymore. If you can't get it, post back and I'll check it out on 98 to give you the exact procedure, or, somebody else may step in to help.

If you right click on the shortcut you have now and choose properties; what does it show for a target?

Charlotte R. At--If I understand, you have problems and want to restore your HardDrive to the status it was in before the problems.
Assuming the problem started less than five days ago, simplest is to use Scanreg /restore.
Start|Shutdown|Restart in MS-DOS Mode. When restarted type Scanreg /restore at the prompt|Enter|Chose a date before the problem|Enter|Wait|Reboot.

Thanks Zander. As I was following your suggestions to reinstall backup, I remembered when I reinstalled my windows previously (trying to recover Freecell and Solitaire which did not work) that I had looked for Backup in Accessories, not in System Tools, therefore, I had failed to check Backup for installation. This time I made sure to check Backup and it worked. Again, thank you.

I still have not been successful in reinstalling my Games. Do you know anything about them or should I do another post headed Games?

I have now completed deleted my games and tried to reinstall them but it did not take. Previously when I clicked Freecell, it gave me this message:

"An error has occurred in your program. To keep workig anyway, click ignor and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click close. You will lose information you entered since your last save "

If I clicked Ignore, nothing happened. When I clicked close I get this message:

"This program has performed an illegal operation and willl shut down. If the program persists, contact the program vendor. "

    Any suggestions?

Glad to hear you got it fixed.

As to the problem with the games, it hard to say without knowing a few things. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the games in the manner I spoke of previously? If you have and you still get the error message, more than likely they are installed properly but something that's running in the background is causing the problem. At least this has been my experience with problems of this sort with the MS games. Try clicking start>run and type msconfig. Click on the startup tab and uncheck everything except explorer and systray. Then reboot and see if the games run. If they do, it's just a matter of process of elimination to find which one is causing the problem. Go back into msconfig and re-check a few and reboot. If the games still work, try one or a few more, reboot and see if the games still work. If they do, try again. If they don't work, you'll know it's one of the last ones that you re-checked that's causing the problem. Once you find the one, leave it unchecked and that should be the end of it. However, if it turns out it's a program that needs to be running (such as an antivirus program) that's causing the problem, then steps should be taken to find just what's causing the conflict with the program.

Most of the programs listed on the startup tab can be unchecked and you'll never miss them. If you're not sure about them, you could post the list here and I or somebody else can let you know which ones you need and which you don't.

I don’t quite understand how to "uninstall" Games. If I right click on FreeCell in Games and go to Properties, it gives an option to delete but no uninstall. If I go to Add/Remove Programs and click on Games, that is supposed to install, not uninstall.. I did reinstall Games but that just left me with what it was doing before.

I did what you said by clicking start/run and type msconfig. I not find an Explorer file as you suggested. So I simply unclicked everything (other than Systray) and rebooted. I went to Games "“ Freecell "“ and it was just like it was.

I have found something interesting: Maybe this will help:

When I click on FreeCell in Games "“ General Tab– it shows this:
    Type: Shortcut
    Circuit size 276 bites
    MSDOS name Freecell.lnk
    Created 5-5-04
    Modified 10-7-04

I found a Freecell here: Start\Programs\WindowsExplorer\Windows\Freecell which shows this:
    Type: Application
    Size 27.9 KB
    Location: Windows
    MsDos Name: Freecell.exe
    Created: 10-7-04
    Modified: 5/11-98

How do you modify something before it was created? Something is desperately wrong here.

Does any of this make sense?

The easiest thing to try first (always my approach, anyway) to fix the games is to go back to Control Panel>Add/Remove Programs>Windows Setup tab>Accessories and uncheck the games to uninstall them. Let Windows complete the uninstall.

Then go back, recheck the box(es) for the games and let Windows reinstall them. It may ask for your Windows CD so have it handy.

Sometimes Windows just insists things be done "officially" before it will play nicely. :)

Miz, I did as you advised but it didn't work. When the error message came up in Freecell, I copied what it says:

FREECELL caused a general protection fault
    in module CARDS.DLL at 0001:00000903.

    Does this help expain it?
