Hello, I need some help to fix an AVG and Avast problem.

I am using Windows 7 Professional, Service Pack 1, 32-Bit Operating System.

For many years I have had AVG Free Antivirus and Avast Free Antivirus installed on the pc and they have worked fine.

The other week I noticed that the Avast icon in the sys tray had a red cross on it and advised that

The ‘pc is not secure’ and to ‘press the Fix Now button’.

I did this but it then advised that it could not connect as the Base Filtering Engine (BFE) and Windows Firewall were missing and that this was probably the result of a virus accessed through Flashplayer.

I ran Malwarebytes and restarted the pc then checked services.msc and found both the missing items were back.

I have since deleted AVG and Avast (apart from the Avast icon in the sys tray which won’t go even though I tried AvastClear) and have downloaded a new Free AVG but I am still unable to install it.

    Any advise please.

    1. Never install more than one AntiVirus software.. Manual/Free Malwarebytes and one of the others is OK...
    2. You said you have since DELETED Both. Did you mean UNinstall both?

Hi Learner, Welcome to WindowsBBS. :)
I agree with Steve. NEVER use Mutiple Antivirus programs at once on a computer. You will have/suffer conflicts when both AV's are working. This has been a known problem since W98!!
I would suggest you Google Antivirus programs to see who is going to support W7 which will no longer be supported by MS. I have an idea Avast have stated they propose to support W7 users for a period.
I would suggest you use AVG uninstall program to remove all traces of their software.
Maybe time to consider the upgrade to W10 if your PC is compatible. This is still FREE with legitimate Product Key.

What happens//doesn't happen when you attempt to install AVG??? Do you get an error message? If so - what does it say?

ADW cleaner would be my suggestion to clean out any stray entries remaining when you uninstalled AVG.
I seem to remember that it was important to remove all traces of the old AVG before installing a fresh copy.
ADW will also enable a clean out of any Avast which may be left behind.
